MetHotM
At the recent session of the Idaho con
ference held at Idaho Falls, the Commer
sun uiud or vveiser laano made a prop
osition to the Conference in which they
agreed to purchase the Weiser Academy
and present the same to the Idaho con
ference for immediate use, and, at the
end of five years, provided they have
maintained it successfully, and desire to
continue, the entire property will be
deeded to the conference free from all
incumbrance.
On Tuesday August 28th the com
mission, appointed by the conference to
consider the proposition met at Weiser,
and voted unaminously to accept the
offer. Steps will be taken at once to
put everything in readiness so that the
school can be opened by Oct. I st. for
work of the Fall Term.
The academy will be known in the
future as the Jason Lee Academy of
Methodist Episcopal Church in memory of
that intrepid hero of religous works who
did so much to lay the foundations of the
great empire of the North West. The
Commission, which by vote of the
conference now constitutes the Board of
Trustees is as follow: Presiding Elder J.
D. Gillilan of La Grande, President
of the board; Rev.G. W. Barnes of Boise
P. E. of the Boise district; Rev. G. H.

boat destroyers which are to be built
for the government this year. The new
destroyers, according to the tentative
proposition, will be larger than any hither
to built for this government, but not as
large as some of the vessels of that type
under construction abroad. The naval
construction forces that development of
the destroyer will soon bring it into the
class of scout, and already the merging is
perceptible in the construction of this class
abroad. The destroyer has come into a
larger function in connection with sub
marine, and will undoubtedly, the experts
predict, lead to the extention of the har
bor defense vessels of the monitor type.
The new destroyers w.ll have increased
speed and larger radius of action, more
powerful armament, and will correspond
ingly be more of a fighting machine of
the deep.

land included in the grant, which will be
put under cultivation, as soon as the pro
posed plan of the city council for irriga
tion has been completed. .
Up to the present time the academy
has been maintained by the Congrega
tional church, but owing to the presence
in the same town of an Agricultural insti
tute, under the patronage o.'
'.he same church. the academy
has not been successfully maintained. It
is confidently believed, however, that under
the large patronage of the Methodist
church, it will supply a long felt need;
and as a Christian Home school will prove
a great blessing to thousands of young
people in our scattered towns, and that
it can ahd will be a success.
There will be three courses of study
Classified, Musical and Commercial, under
competent instructors.
Rev. B. F. Meredith, pastor of the
Methodist church of this city and secre
tary of the board of trustees has been au
thorized to devote whatever time can be
spared from his regular work, soliciting
stndents and funds. He expects to can
vas the conference territory for the next
six weeks.
The buildings were thoroughly renovated
throughout only a year ago and are fully
furnished and reads for occupancy. It is
estimated that about $5000 will be need
ed for equipment and maintenance for
the 1st year. It is hoDed
that this fitting monument to the memory
of our first Missionary, Jason Lee, will
appeal to a wide circle of friends, and
that assistance will be received from a
wide radius. Already five members of
the conference, out of their meager sala
ries, have subscribed $ 1 75 towards the
expenses of the present year.
Contributions may be sent to the Trea
surer. Mr. F. S. Harding, of Weiser, or
to the Secretary, B. F. Meredith, of La
Grande, Oregon.
ACCIDENT AT WALLA WALLA
A man named Emil Cameron had his
right arm ground to peices at the depot
at Walla Walla yesterday afternoon.
The injured man was a passenger on
the Spokane-Pendleton flyer and during
the stop at Walla Walla he had gone to
a nearby restaurant. Running to reboard
the tram he was caught between the
platform and buffet car and carried to the
ground. After the train had passed the
member was terribly mangled. The man
is a former employee of the 0. R. Sl N.
as he carried switch keys similar to those
used.

THEN AND NOW
We all know the typewriter has come
to stay. We discovered that lor.g ago.
It is only a question which typewriter, for
the word is well and truly used in the
singular sense.
The typewriter that has come to stay is
not the one of ten years back, when in
novation caused such a stir in business
circles. Then nobody ever thought of as
sociating the word "alignment" with a
typewriter; it satisfied the user so long as
the machine would write some fashion or
other, and with constant break-downs
ever-present repair bills were paid smil
ingly. But things are different now.
Time tests all things. The business man
has become wise. He wants what he
pays for. He has learned the value (from
dearly-bought experience) of a machine
which will write properly, not only the
day it is bought, but perpetually.
He also wants to be satisfied upon the
peculiarities of the many machines now
before the public. The individual claims
of our product places its position beyond
all question, and the few particulars we
give on the following pages will, no doubt
be found of interest to those buyers who
"want what they pay for"
ABOUT THE OLIVER
The No. 3 Model, which has secured
such a firm foothold on the universal
markets, constitutes what is reckoned as
the most perfect typewriter possible.
WHY?
Here is our answer
IT WRITFS IN SIGHT
There is no carriage to lift; no con
structional parts to peer over. Your
work is there right before you.
ALIGNMENT
Each type-bar is a double or U-shaped
one and the alignment is secured thereby.
No slots or so-called "guides" are neces
sary to preserve the alignment of the
Oliver. The U-shaped type-bar does it.
SIMPLICITY
In the construction of the Oliver less
than one-half the usual number of parts
is employed, consequently what there is
to learn is learnt quickly.
MANIFOLDING
The freedom of the Oliver type-bar
permits of any desired force, so that in
heavy manifolding equally good results
are obtained first to last copy.
From one to twenty copies can be
made simultaneously, without materially
increased exertion.
STENCILING
No extra-heavy touch is needed to cut
a perfect stencil on the Oliver. The or
dinary touch is sufficient, therefore all
risk of "cutting out" is avoided. The tvpe
of the Oliver cut the finest stencils pos
sible. OPERATION
The Oliver never tires. Its operation
s a pleasure, even when used without
intermission. Its tcuch is beautifully
elastic and most responsive. The fastest
operator cannot overtake its speed.
NON-LOCKING TYPE-BARS
The type-bars of the Oliver cannot lock.
no matter how many keys be depressed
at one time.
TYPE CLEANING
The type of the Oliver are not, as with
other machines, cleaned individual, but
collectively, and the case with which this
cleaning in done makes excuse for dn ty
type impi ssible.
LINE RULING
Lines, either vertical or horizontal, and
in any color, may be ruled upon paper
whilst it is in the machine, and without
the aid of a ruler. Ordinarily. any neces
sary ruling is left, of course, until it can
be done in the usual way. but
forgotten.

PAPER RELEASE
By a single movement absolute freedom
is given to the paper, leaving it to be
either straightened or otherwise moved
in any desired position. No force is nec
essary, consequently no soiling or tearing,
of the paper occurs.
CARD WORK
The Oliver typewriter will feed the
stiffest and stoutest card as easily as a
single sheet of paper.
A WORD ON INVOICING
If there is anything which demenstrates
to the full the value of the Oliver for tab
ular work, it is invoicing. To those j&M
, hii(lfnwrj.inB machines who attempt
to satisfactorily prepare invoices thereon,
the futility of such a task must surely be
apparent. Mechanical contrivances
(known as "tabulators") have been de
vised, it is true, to assist them, but so
much time is lost in "setting" the mech
anism, to which must be added the con
stant raising of the carriage (occasioned
by the operator's lack of confidence in the
tabulator), that the invoice could very well
be written by hand in half the time. Fur
thermore, tabulators on other than Oliver
typewriters, interfere very seriously with
vital parts of the typewriter itself, render
ing it very unreliable for ordinary use,"
The Oliver is the ideal machine fotr
voicing. With its visible writing, per
manent printing point, indicator and per
fect release key, margins are instantly
found and maintained-all with greatest
simplicity. No tabulator is necessary on
the Oliver, but, if one is wanted, we sup
ply the best laouiaiur inauu. Cwu iii
mind, however, that we save extra cost
and give better results.
Again, with the wonderful manifolding
power of the Oliver, it will make as man
copies of an invoice as required, and every
copy clear and distinct.
The use of an Oliver for invoicing in
sures f. .
Speed, legibility, efficiency, economy,
neatness and regularity.
The Oliver is already adopted by some
of the largest business houses for invoicing
as well as correspondence purposes, fur
ther particulars of which we shall be
pleased to furnish on application.
