The scarcity of packers to handle the
prune crop at the packing houses of this
city is still bothering commission men,
and efforts have been made this week to
have the opening of school postponed a
week until the bulk of tha crop has been
disposed of. This plan was unsnccassful
and the schools will open on Monday,
September 3, as announced.
The proprietors of the produce houees
have gained one point, however, which
will materially aid them in their time of
trouble. All students of school age. who
come under the jurisdiction of the truant
officer will be permitted to remain away
from their studies for the purpose of
packing fruit if their parents offer no
objections. There is a large number of
employes engaged at the Walla Walla
Produce house this week, but the prunes
are pouring in so fast that it is almost
