OFFICERS
(Serlppa News Association)
Washington, D. C. Aua. 29 Tha War
Department has heard nothing further
concerning Lieutenant John S. Hamilton
of the 12th Infantry, since his disappear
ance some weeks a'oro from Fort Jav.
New York, here he was stationed. Fears
are entertained by his friends that he is
mentally affected and that soma harm
has come to him. His brother, formerlv
a lieutenant in the army, Is now a patient
at the government hospital for the insane
here, where he was sent following a
series of wild escapades in the Philippines.
I he two officers were twin brothers and
obtained commissions in the army about
the same time. They gave promise of
being bright and capable officers and of
having most creditable careers. Lieuten
ant L. C. Hamilton, brother of Lieutenant
t rs i , " ... . .
t, a. namiiion, resigned by request be
fore it was fully known in Washington to
what extent he had misbehaved himself
or that he was mentally affected. The
aosence or the other brother has created
much sympathy for the family of the two
young men. The military authorities do
not expect to hear again of Lieutenant
Hamilton, unless he is overtaken some
where. He will then be tried for absence
without leave. If he does not appear of
his own accord within three months he
will be dropped from the army register
as a deserter at the end of that period.
BIG (LASS FOR f. Of A.
At .their last regular meeting, the
Foresters of America, completed arrange
ments for the big class initiation and
banquet next Thursday evening. They
expect to have with them at that time
some of the members from Baker City
also the Grand Court officers from Port'
land. The locai court is increasing its
membership very rapidly, and this class
will give them a membership of nearly a
hundred and fifty. The order has now a
membership in the United States of three
hundred thousand and last year paid out
over two million dollars to its members
in sick and accident benefits. The order
contributed nearly a hundred thousand
dollars to the Foresters relief fund at the
time of the San Francisco disaster, in
which city they had forty two courts. A
remarkable showing for an order' that in
1889 had a membership of only fifty
five thousand members In the United
States.
