THE STAGE
Of the t o ies told at the expense of the
late John Stetson, of Boston, there is ap
parently no end. Most laymen have for
gotten the identity of this theatre owner,
whose personality was firmly stamped on
his friends, but ancedotes concerning
him, though credited to other people, con
tinue to be printed from tin e to time. -
Harry Hermseh, who is in "The Roval
Chef," who relates a tale which may be
unfamiliar.
Stetson employed as manager of the
Tremont Theatre, a man whose name
was Sharp. This individual had little
power, nd his wage giver was jealous of
that little. One day Stetson hurried into
the office of the Tremont with the angiy
nquiry: "Mr. Sharp, I would like to
know who gave you authority to sign
your name 10 announcements concerning
this house?" "I never do," replied the
man. "You don't, eh?" snarled Stetson,
"Well, then, will you please explain to
me the sign on the side walk?"
Employer and employe repaired to the
curb. There stood a board on which
was painted: "Evening performance at
8:30. . Matinees at 2 o'clock sharp."
"There!" exclaimed Stetson, triumph
antly pointing to the last word on the
board, I should like to know what you
SHREWD WOMEN DETECTIVES
A good story of how two women from
Portland tricked a number of men in this
city into making them believe that they
(the women) were "good fellows", and
and secured evidence that may lead to
their indictment for violating the prohibi
tion law, is begining to leak out.
A little over a week ago two buxom
women arrived in Eugene on the south
bound train and enquired of persons at
the depot as to location of a well-known
sporting house. They secured rooms and
then began their work, They made the
acqu i.itance of quite a number of men
about town, so the story goes, and on sev
eral occasions "went the rounds" with
them, drinking beer and other "soft drinks'
and having a general good time. It now
turns out that the women were in the
employ of the Anti-Saloon League, or the
Law Enforcement League or what ever
it is, at Portla id, and that they will testify
before the grand jury where they
got the liquor and who sold it to them.
It is needless to say that the women have
left the city. Eugene Guard.
