trip up Grande Ronde river. Thev are
investigating sites ect, relative to an irri
gation project. These wide awake men
realize what irrigation means to this val.ev
and are planning to use some of the waste
waters or Grande Ronde river. It is act
ually bordering on to a sin to Datientlv re
main inactive and permit the waters of
our streams to pass on to the sea with
out attemptine to store a small Ddrtion of
it to be used when it would do the most

Dr. T. R. Monk, proprietor of the
Electric Concert ' Company will give an
exhibition at Cove next Saturday evening
and will also exhibit at North Powder
the following Tuesday. The Electric
Concert Company has given a number
exhibitions at various points in this and
Wallowa valley has been able to satisfy
all who have attended. Aside from the

of this vicinity have formed a trust and
hereafter the price of four foot wood will

Wagoner expects to move out to his fruit

Mr. Joseph Woods, proprietor of the
Red Livery barn left this morning for
Haines where he goes after a team which
a pair of unscrupelous persons left after
using it for two days. There will be
something doing if Joe gets on their
track.
The pr3sent shower so far have done
no damage but a protracted rain would
inconvenience the farmers matterially and
would result in more or less loss. Owing
to the scarcity of labor this season harvest
is not as far advanced as usual at this
time of the year and much of it is shocked
in the field.
Cashier F. L. Meyers and Contractor
John SUter have returned from Newburg
where they went to inspect the pressed
brick for the new La Grande National
Bank building. They were successful in
finding the desired quality, and as soon as
the brisk arrives the building will be
pushed to completion.
Mr. N. D. Varner, of Wallowa is in
the city this week transacting business
Mr. Ba mens one of Wallowa County 's lead
-ing dairyman. Djri-g the m;nth of June
his dairy herd consisted of fifty two head
of mi'ch cows. He is or.e of strongest
patrons of the wallowa branch of the
Blue Mountain Creamy Co. and says
he is more than satisfied with his monthly
check.
Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Dickey arrived this
morning from Tacoma and will visita few
days prior to going to their recently
purchased farm near Baker City. They
bought a fine 400acre tract, well watered,
for which they paid $10,000, and is con
sidered a great bargain by all who know
the place. It is possible that their son.
Mr. C. E. Dickey, and son-in-law. Mr. T.
H. Boynton, will assist in the management.

' Jack Chillis Hurt
This afternoon, shortly after two o'clock
while JackChiids was moving the Baptist
church, the capstain pulled up and struck
him. Mr. Childs was fully thirty feet
from the capstain when the pins pulled i-p.
He was struck on the head and rendered
unconcious. The capstain weighs nearly
a ton, and it is remarkable that with such
a weight falling upon him that he escapes
with his life. At the time of going to
prees he had not regained conciousness.
Dr. A. L. Richardson, the attending phy
sician states that no bones are broken,
and thit so far as he is able to determine
at this time he thinks ..hat no permanent
injury has been inflicted.

was at dinner today some one entered
through the back door and opened the
cash register and carried off all the
change. As near as Mr. Disqua knows
the robber or robbers secured in
the vicimily of twelve dollars. In the
afternoon Chief of Police Rayburn and
Constable Faulk rounded up five likely
looking hobos and took them to tne city
jail where they were carefully searched,
but nothing of more value than a bottle
of alcohol was discovered. The men are
still kept in prison, with the hope that
after dancing the bedbug jig a few days
they will be able to know more about
the disappearance of the coin.

KNIFE MAN IN JAIL
John Sumpter. who claims to hail from
Butler, Nevada, reached La Grande yes
terday and proceeded to fill np on rye
water and mix up with everything he met.
In the course of his wanderings he met
Chief of police Rayburn who at once
placed him uuder arrest. While the ar
rest was in progress Sumpter made a few
flurishes with a large butcher knife, but
before he could create any damage he
was placed in a harmless condition and
taken to the city jail. This morning he
appeared before Justice Hough, where he
waived examination and was placed
under $300 bonds to appear before the
October term of court.
RIBBED SECTION HOUSE
A warrant is out for the arrest of
Chas. Black, of Hilgard. charging him
wiih robbing the Hilgard section house.
It is alleged that he stole some five or
six dollars in cash. Sheriff Childers left
for Hilgard for Black and the witness this
afternoon.
