What is expected to be the greatest state conven tion of the Odd Fellows of the state of New York opened here today in the most auspicious manner. The city is handsome ly decorated and thousands nf people fill the streets, which bear a decided holiday aspect. It is estimated that fully thirty thousand members of the order are in the city and many of them are accompanied by their ladies. The arrangements for the reception and the entertainment of the visiting delegates are thoroughly sys tematized and everything moves smoothly. Altnough the hotels are taxed to their full capacity the visiting Odd Fellows have no difficulty in finding suitable' quarters. One of the great events of the Grand Lodge -. . . . m m --. i i rTTrtv a mm ON WATER AO Mr. Editor La Grande Observer: lr. regarde to the La Grande Water proposition. After reading the Mayor's report I was well pleased with the results of the Bea ver creek investigation. But I am not pleased with the Mayor's method as he expressed it of conveying the water 8 or 1 0 miles in wooden boxing, as the boxing would become slimy and pollute the water especially when crossing meadow land or passing through dark forest and after a time be sucject to constant repair a con crete sewer would do for miles at the be ginning without pressure. But 1 think the best method is the latest improved pipe from a natural and permanent reservoir at the source, and If the pressure is too strong fvr the pipe empty them if neces sary into natural reservoirs. It is essential when first doing the work to get all the water or power that can be obtained from that district. We can lease our surplus power for factories to help pay up our city's indebtedness. It is a well known fact that our sister coun ties, Wallowa and Umatilla, are sheep raising counties. Then why stand back and let their wool produot pass our doors to eastern and other markets to be manu factured when we can Just as well manu facture it at home. Then let us put our heads together and paste on the wall the motto of great and glorious country, United We Stand, Divided We Fall," and put in a woolen mill in, the city of La Grande that will do credit to Eastern Oregon.
