HE CALLED HIM PROMPTLY
Dr. Smith was in town yesterday from
Boise. He has a brand new story, which
be is relating to his friends, which runs
something like this. There was a new
night clerk on duty at one of the Boise
hotels. A guest wanted to be callad at
7 o'clock. The new man looked at the
call sheet and found that all the spaces
for that hour had been filed in, and re
marked to the guest: "You'll have to
take a 7:30 cell; all the 7 o'clock are

How Dr. Smith got hold of the story is
not known. There was an effort on the
part of the hotel people to keep it quiet,
but it any rate it is evident Dr. Smith
was not given the correct version. Now
that the cat is out of the bag the real
f.-cts might as well be given. , The guest
told the clerk he wished to be called at
8 o'clock. After the guest Had retired
the new clerk happened to remember
that he went off duty at 7 o'clock; that
he would .iot be on hand to call the guest
at 8 o'clock. He thought over the mat
ter a while and then solved the problem.
He called the guest twice at 4 o'clock

Sonora, Mex.,' Aug. 1 8 Destructive
forest fires are still raging through the
section bounded by the South Fork of the
Stanislaus river and Rose creek. The
burned district covers nine miles in length
and three miles in width. Last night the
fire jumped across the South Fork and a
determined fight is now being made to
save the saw mill and valuable improve
ments on the Kelta mine. The progress
of the flames have In a measure been
checked on the west, but they are still
sweeping eastward. The flames are now
consuming a valuable timber belt and a
crew of fire fighters left this morning for
a confident and determined fight. The
timber belt that is no v threatened repre
sents a million d.llars in money.
BARHARD GETS TWO YEARS
ON MCNEILL'S ISLAND

Portland Aug. 1 8 Federal Judge
Hunt today sentenced Geo. Barhard,
convicted of perjury in connection with
homestead claims, to two years on Neil's
Island. The sentenced of Watson was
postponed as he turned state evidence
after conviction.
ARMED INVASION INTO CANADA ,

Ottawa, Ont., August ' 8. About twelve
hundred officers and1- men' of the New
York militia and a number' of companies
of various militia regiments in other East
ern states arrived here, bearing theirarms
by permission of the Canadian Govern
ment. The occasion is the annual visit at
the invitation of the British Army and
Navy Veteran Association, of BosUnj
Mass. The soldiers pay their own fare
and defray their own expenses on the trip,
but the officers and men of the Ottawa
garrison have arranged an elaborate
program for the entertainment of their
visitors.

NEW BAKER SCHOOL HOUSE
The new $20,000 school building in
North Baker is rapidly assuming propor
tions of a completed structure. The frame
is up to the second story and the work is
being rushed as fast as men can be se
cured to do t' e work.
This building, when completed, will
have eight large, well lighted and Well
heated school rooms as well as all the
conveniences of cloak rooms, closets, class
rooms etc. In shape and general appear
ance it closely resembles the South Baker
building, but differing in the respect tha
the second story ceilings will be two feet
higher above the windows.
The entire building will be heated by

OLD AND RESPECTED
The meeting at Minneapolis was the
fourtieth national encampment of the
Grand Army of the Republic. The organ
ization was formed forty years ago last
April, and the first encampment was held
in November of that year.. There was
no encampment, however in 1 867. Since
no soldier or sailor can obtain member
ship who were not in service prior to April
9, 1865, no member at this encampment
can be less than 59 years of age. Tha
membership numbered 409,487 in 1890,
a year ago it was 232.055, and the death
rate is gradually increasing.

LIFE TIME OWNERSHIP
In discussing the wisdom of extending
public ownership of public utilities, the
San Francisco Chronicle expresses a
thought which frequently comes to
pei sons who run up against life-time
officials, it says: "When public servants
in America betray a disposition to do
anything else than draw their salaries,
we may begin to think of trusting them
with important works; untill then we had
better depend on individual effort, which
accomplishes something at least, even
though faults may mark the doing,
EQUALIZERS AFTER WALLA WALLA
The county board of equalization, at
Walla Walla not only advanced the assess
ment of nearly all the saloons in the town
but found three that were not on the tax
list at all. They are owned by Peter
Werner, who owns the Horseshoe saloon
on Main Street, was assessed at $800;
S. Stovall, who owns the Depot saloon on
Elm Street, was assessed at $600, and
John Potras, owner of the Owl on Alder
Street, was assessed at $600. Pendle

MEDEORD POST OFFICE BURNS
The post office building at Eagle Point,
the eastern terminus of the Medford
Crater Lake railroad, burned Friday
morning. The loss is about $1600 and
the insurance $700. Postmaster Florey
occupied the building as a residence. His
family was absent in the mountains, ex
cept one boy, who had a narrow escape
from the fire, escaping in his'night clothes
