Norfolk, V., Aug.-18. Although Nor
folk is widely known a a local point
where eight railroad line with an aggre
gate of twenty thousand miles of track
meet eight mile of river and coast steam
er and fivs lines of deep-sea steamers,
and its harbor is famous all over the
world, comparatively little is known of
the city as an important center of the
fishing trade. Yet this port, today a cen
ter of international interest because of the
Jamestown Ter-Centennial Exposition to
be held in ! 907 on the nearby shores of
Hampton Roads, keeps in commission all
the year a fleet of nearly three hundred
fishing boats.
Cottagers residing on the shores of
Hampton Roads, near the site of the
Jamestown Exposition, can go a few hun
dred yards out from short and in a few
moments with the most simple equipment
catch a dozen vaiieties of edible fish.
Boys often may be .seen pushing skiffs
around the mud flats of the harbor at low
tide, stopping her and there to pick
stranded crabs off the harbor bottom, from
which the water has receded. If Norfolk
were to be placed in a state of siege with
out notice the besieger would find it first
necessary to effect the stupenduous at d
well nigh impossible task of closing York
and James rivers, Hampton Roads, Eliza
beth river, the Dismal Swamp and Albe
marle and Currituck Sounds to Norfolk
Sih'r"n h mnlH hnn to starve
the city into submission.
The Norfolk fishing fleet comprises al
most every kind of small craft known in
this country. The favorite style of fish
ing boat is the "bugeye." This carries
two leg-o'-mutton sails on raking masts
and a jibsail. The "bugeye" is not long,
but very wide and shallow. It is pointed
at both ends and is an exceptionally gcod
boat for work around rivers and harbors
and where the water is shallow. Though
small, It is a good heavy weather boat
and can stand an incredible amount of
pounding. Sloops and schooners of from
five to one hundred tons' burden carrying
from six to a dozen men are also numer
ous in the fishing trade. There are a few
large steamers in the fishing fleet and a
great number " of small craft driven by
gasoline engines. These have their fish
ing grounds in the lower Chesapeake Bay,
in Hampton Roads, in Currituck and Al
bemarle Sounds, reached from Norfolk
through the Dismal Swamp canals, and
in the open sea where the finest of deep
water fish the blueish lurks, ready to
furnish the liveliest sport the fisherman
can find.
In addition to the great fleet that makes
Norfolk its permanent headquarters a
goodly number of fishing boats come to
this city every year from New York and
Philadelphia and make Norfolk their head
quarters during the summer fishing season.
During the past year the oyster boats
brought oysters into Norfolk to the value
of nearly four million dollars. Most of
these were the famous Lynhavens oysters
considered bv many to be superior to
the much-prized Blue Point oysters of
Long Island, Next to the Lynhavens in
the favor of the public are the Chincot-
eague oysters and Horn Harbor crusta
ceans. There are a half dozen other
varieties not so well known. Norfolk's
oyster trade is constantly growing, every
year a round dozen of boats are added to
the oyster fleet.
Shad fishing is an important feature in
Nurgolk's commerce. Last year however
was an unusually on 'or hat
along the Atlant.c coast, and the figures
for shad show up as laige as for other
fish in the totals of the fishing business.
Large quantities of porgies. flounders and
sheepshead are sold every day in Norfolk
for local consumption. Among the highly
prized game fish to be bought in Norfolk
markets are the black bass, stripped bass
salmon, trout, Spanish bluefish and spot
ted trout. These are among the finest
food fish to be found anywhere and are
much sought after by those who seek to
Tiaintain the table of an epicure. There
are also to be found in gre$ t quantities
in the water that turround Norfolk perch,
hogfish and pickerel. These are popular
food fish.
Norfolk's equipment for storing fish and
her transportation facilitier can be equall
ed by no other fishing port on the Atlan
tic coast. A large proportion of the fish
sold; Philadelphia, Baltimore and Wash
ington get heavy shipments daily. When
Norfolk boatsj put out for the fishing
grounds they carry large quantities of
ice in which the fish are placed as soon
as caught. The fish are thereafter kept
in ice constantly until they reach the con
sumer. A visit to one of the great fish
houses of Norfolk will well repay a visitor,
in the interesting sights to be seen there.
Though Norfolk flshdealers are modest in
speaking of their business a slight investi
gation will show any one that the city's
competition is a matter to be reckoned
with by the large fishing ports of the At
lantic coast.
