Wire is being strung this week for '
private telephone line from the office of
the 0. R. & N., at the depot, to the Central
Railroad office in Union. i
Win, Kirk this week bought the Fisher
place in North Union, formerly the Thos.
Adams place, and will occupy it himself.
Mr. Fisher will move closer down town
and expect to go into business here.'
Saturday was railroad pay-day, and
several thousand dollars were scattered
around among the employes of the com
pany in this section. The construction of
the railroad is doing much to help this
place this summer a fact that our people
fully realize. The Central is all right.
Deputy Game Warden John Ladd is of
the opinion that there- is much infraction
of the game laws in this county, yet he
fii.ds it very difficult to apprehend those
persons who do unlawful things along that
line. Mr. Ladd finds it impossible to be

Hiram Clay, whose right hand was
severely injured last week, has been in
St. Vincent hospital in Portland since the
2nd inst He is now able to use the
hand whici is now nearly well. There
will be no permanent injury. His family
expects him home in a few days. North

G. W. Prillman was thrown from his
wagon last week and had his side and
back badly bruised and wrenched. It
will be some time before he fully recov

The Oregon Construction company has
moved its pile driver to near the Hutchin
son dam on Catherine creek and work
has begun on the first bridge for the
Central RailwajJ It will not be very long
now until the steel gang follows.
Lester Graham was badly hurt by a
fall from a tree while working for the
Vergere Telephone company, about six
miles east of Union. The lad fell about
30 feet and it was remarkable that he
was neither killed nor maimed for life,

The Vergere Telephone line is now
completed to town and the local exchange
has been installed in the office of the
Hotel McCrae. Mrs. Chas. Hug, of Elgin,
has charge of the office.
Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Melquist, accom
panied by their friends Mrs. Newell and
daughter from Portland, passed through
this city Monday evening enroute home
from a camping trip to the lake.
Dr. McKennon.of Parksville, Ark., is in
town this week visiting his niece, Mrs.
C. A. Vurpillat He is accompanied by his
brother-in- law, J. M. Berry of La Grande,
who has been showing him around the
valley. The doctor is very well pleased
with the country, but says it looks rather
odd not to see fields of cotton.

Sir Alfred ScoO-Gatty visited St
George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, the
other day and placed in position the ban
ner of the Emperor of Japan as a mem
ber of the Order of the Garter, the Insig
nia cf which he was invested with a few
months ago by Prince Arthur of Con
naught on behalf of the Sovereign of the
Order, King Edward. The banner bears
a chrysanthemem in gold on a scarlet
ground with a gold fringe. The banners
of the King of Wurttenberg and the
Crown Prince of Sweden were also placed
in position.
TO STOP SMUGGLING OF ARMS

Foreign Office the Board of Trade has
recived a copy of a note from the Russian
Ambassador to the effect that the
clandestine importation into Russia by
sea of arms, ammunition, and explosive,
was assuming considerable proportions,
and the ordinary customs vilgilance was

In comformity with an artiicle in the
Russian Code, which provides that in
case of necessity the vessels of the
Russian Navy should co-operate with
the Customs authorities for the discovery
and seizure of contraband, the Russian
Government had decided to reinforce the
ordinary surveillane of the Customs in
the Baltic Sea and its gulfs by means of
Russian war vessels empowered to in
spect and effect the arrest of suspected
ships.
