There was but little trouble in securing
this part of the route but from Mass Chapel
to this city there are many routes and the
Oregon Central Railroad Company through
its agent, will adopt the path that will do
the LJl damage to the ranchers and still
bring tne best results.

pressed in regard to the intrinsic value
that this road will give to La Grande.

DEAD MAN WAS RICH

who was killed in the railrojrn yards this
morning by an engine severing his head
from his body, had a draft for five hun
dred dollars in his pocket issued by the
Lewiston Montana bank, and also five

SECOND JURY AT WORK

second federal grand jury today in regard

depositors of the First National Bank saw
that the doors were closed this mornincr

New York, Aug. 1 7.-The Union Paci
fic this morning announced a semi-annual
dividend of five per cent on common
and two per cent on preferred stock. Thi
puts the Union Pacific on the 1 0 per cent
basis. The Southern Pacific this morning
declared a dividend of two and a half per
cent on common stock. This is the first
dividend ever paid. This is stated to be
semi-annually. The Union Pacific divi
dend is payable to stockholders of rAMrri
on Sept. 1 5. The Southern Pacific is
payable on October 1, to holder of divi
dend warrants. Dividends have been ex
pected for eome time, as both companies
have been showing immense earnings.

Harriman is to acquire control over th
Chicago Milwaukee and St. Paul railway,
assumed a more definite shape today.
It is positively asserted that necotiaHnna
are now pending but no official confirm
ation is obtainable.
The original proportion was that th

road, but that would be in violation of
the inter-state commerce laws and con
sequently the matter was dropped while

ches report that a terrific earthquake,
followed by fir at Val raiso. Chili, last
night all but destroyed that city. There
is hardly a building but what Is damaged.
The casualties are reported in later dis
patches and say that no conservative
figure can yet be placed. Still later dis
patches say that cables are working as

South America. Last night the seismo
graph here gave a clear record showing
that the earth swayed a quarter of an
inch, and began at seven twenty-nine
and continued four hour. Records indi
cate that it must have been a severe
hock at Valparaiso. The recording oen
was not so much agitated a during the

TREMORS SLOW
Washington, Aug. 17. The weather
bureau's official statement of the full
tecord of the earthquake has been pub
lished. The tremors here were compar
atively slow covering eighteen to forty
i seconds and finally ceased about mid
night. They were by far the heaviest
since the San Francisco disaster.
Keports are conflicting, , this
afternoon says that portions of the city
Valpariso burned all night and hundreds
of citizens are buried under the ruins

loss of life is unconfirmed, but that fires
are burning in various part of the city.

WHERE SITUATED
Vapariso, a fortified city, the capital
of a province of its own name, and the
principal port of Chili, is situated on
large bay in the Pacific 90 miles W. N. W.
of Santiago.
The Say of Valpariso is of a semi
circular form, and capable of
accommodating a very large fleet. It is
well sheltered, but is entirely open to
