HARBOR
(Scrlpps Newe Association)
Bar Harbor. Me., August 16. The an
nual dog show under the auspices of the
American Kennel Club will be opened
here this afternoon and everything indi
cates that it will be one of the largest and
best shows of that kind ever held here,
The show is held under large tents which
have been erected on Cottage Street and
the management is in the hands of com
petent experts from Boston. 519 classes
have been provided for and nearly every
recognized breed of dogs will be repre
sented in the exhibit. . The show promises
to bs a great society event and has at
tracted many prominent visitors from
New York, Boston, and other large cities.
In addition to the cash prizes which will
be awarded to the winners in every class
more than one hundred special prizes will
be awarded.
CATHOLIC CHURCH f AIR
The ladies are planning a mammoth
fair to be held at a near date. Just which
building it. is to be held in, is not yet
decided, but when the time comes a suita
ble building will be at their disposal. They
have great things planned and have al
ready many prizes on hand to give away.
A system has been inaugurated whereby
a purchaser of a ticket, for one dollar,
gets a chance at every prize, On the
evenings of the fair, which will last a
week, the tickets will be drawn and the
one which is drawn first gets the most
valuable prize. So on down the list
Because you have won one prize will
not stop you from winning another, in fact
you might win every prize, all for one
dollar. Among the prizes are a cow, a
heating stove and other prizes. The best
music procurable will be heard every
evening.

GENERAL WEATHER SUMMARY
The long spell of dry weather was
broken by showers on Sunday and Mon
day, which were heaviest in the neighbor
hood of the Blue Mountains. The rainfall
in the Willamette valley was very light
and barely sufficient to lay the dust For
est fires increased during the week, and
the atmosphere in the west and north
portion of the State became very smoky.
The rains were not heavy enough to ez-
tinguif h the fires, but they cleared the
atmosphere of smoke and madejby it harder
for the fires to spread. The mornings in
the coast counties, as a rule, were either
cloudy or foggy, and the afternoons were
clear. Elsewhere up to the beginning of
the rains fair weather prevailed, with
unusually high temperatures. Friday and
Saturday were very warm days, and in
the interior of the State the maxim tem
perature ranged between ninety and one
hundred degrees. The prevailing winds
were northwesterly.
