business session of the G. A. R. encamp
tkvt opened here today. Crowds of
tottering veterans seeking former
comrades fill the buildings. Many are
expressing sentiments to the effect that
this should be the last G. A. R. encamp
ment as the greater number of members
are reaching such advanced ages and
have so many affirimities that they can
not attend.
Geo. H. Smith, a veteran of the New

H. H. Burke of Kansas died today, ex
haustion and old age. This makes the
second death in the ranks of visiting vet

thorities have issued a drasticedict against
strikers and anarchists as a result of the
fresh outbreaks in this city. A panic is
feared as the outbreaks are becoming

VERMONT LABOR IN POLITICS

Montpelier. Vt, August 14. The fifth
annual convention of the Vermont State
Branch, American Federation of Labor
opened here today with a large attendance
and every organization in the state, affil
iated with the Federation, represented by
delegates. The convention is of unusual
importance owing to the fact that it it
proposed to introduce highly important
labor legislation in the coming session of
the state legislature. These measures
will be thoroughly discussed in the con
vention. Every political candidate has
been questioned with reference to his
stand on labor questions and thase matters
will also be discussed by the delegates.

Goldfield, Nev., Aug. 14. Tna meetirg
of the Goldfield club to select a referee
was not held last night owing to the lack
of response from some of those who had
been wired. Gans began sparring today
with Kid Sims and is within four pound
of weight. His trainer, Frank McDonald
is enthusiastic. Nelson is still unsettled
on training quarters but is doing a little
road work.

Los Angeles Aug. 1 4 There was such
a mob of men and women that stormed
Judge James court this morning to see
Mrs. Auralta Schreck who was recalled to
the stand to tell more about the murder of
her husband by Stackpole, her paramour
that a riot followed. Glass partitions of
the court rooms were broken and demol
ished by the mob. . The trial had to be
stopped until the crowd quieted down on
its own inclination. .
After the room was cleared Mrs. Schreck
continued the confession and told all the
facts about the assissination of Stackpole
and how he planned to murder her husband
so he might marry her. Under the cross
examination Mrs. Schreck said that she
had been lead to believe that it she told
her story on the stand she would never be
tried for murder.

citizens of Brownsville have telegraphed
Adjutant General Hulen that some negro
troops who were recently serit there
from Nebraska have broken out and

others. They are now shooting up the
town. They have clashed with the whites
every time the negroes enter the town.
Hulen has been asked to send rangers.
OHIO ICE INVESTIGATION

Toledo, Ohio, August 14. The govern
ment ice trust investigation began today
with Commissioner Clements conducting ,
the case. He expects to prove that re
bates had been given by railroads to fav
orite companies and that discrimination
was made against the independents.
ARRESTED TOR HISSING FLAG

Boyonne. N. J. Aug. 1 4 James Pierce,
an Englishman, was fined twenty-five !
dollars today for hissing at the American ,
flag at a theatre. The act almost caused
riot. The judge, who assessed the fine,
was one of the audience.
HORSE QUESTION UNSETTLED
The question of the rightful owner for
the horse recently owned by F. E. Still
well and alleged to be the property of
two Umatilla Indians, is still unsettled.
Indian Agent Edwards made demands of
Mr. Stillwell to release the horse but the
present owner failed to respond, and a
suit of replevin was started. The Indians
yesterday were held on a three hundred
dollar bond and the horse turned over to
the charge of Sheiff Childers, untill the
matter is finally settled.
The animal has changed owners three
times and a man named McDavis is the
individual that now mutt explain where
he obtained it. Barney Sparrows pur
chased the horse from the mai McDavis
and has a bill of sale. That lets him out
of the question. Then the animal was
sold to F. E. Stillwell who paid spot cash
after seeing the bill of sale. That lets
Stillwell out. Consequently the man who
will ultimately suffer, provided of course
that the coming trial establishes the fact
that the Indians have a rightful claim, and
who must explain where he secured the
horse in order to sell it. If ha cannot,
there will be a serious charge set against
him.
The Indians art still in town awaiting
the outcome.

TO INCREASE STOCK TWO MILLIONS.

Philadelphia P. August 14 JThe
stockholders of the Philadelphia Company
one of the subsidiaries of the United
Railways Investment Company, will hold
a meeting here this afternoon to vote up
on a proposition to increase the capital
stock bf the corporation from $36.000.
000 to $42,000,000. The increase will
consist of $120,000 shares of cermmon
stock, and the new stock will be offered
to stockholders . of the ' controlling
company. The proceeds will be used to pay
for the stock of the Beaver Valley Tract
ion Company and the Washington and
Cannonsburg Railway Company, which
were purchased last year, and to provide
additional power for the Allegheny County
Light Company and the Pittsburg Rail
way Company. .

regiments went t) Krasnoyet today and
the most rigid steps will be taken to pro
tect the Emperor and his family. No
civilians are allowed to leave the railway
station in this city to go toward the camp
unless fully identified, and none are al
lowed to approach , by any road unless
known. A grand review is planned for
the nineteenth after which the Emperor
and the Imperial family will leave for
Tsarke instead of returning to Peterhoff.

GIRLS ABDUCTED

New York, Aug. 14 Immigration of
ficials have taken three Italian girls from
the hospital at Ellis Island for deporta
tion. They were attacked by Italians
with stilletoes this afternoon. One of the
girls was rescued but the other two es
caped and no trace of them or their ab
ductors can be found.

New York Aug. 1 4. At noon today
Sheriff Flaherty took charge of the
Brooklyn Rapid Transit blockaded cars
to Coney Island and said that ha would
protect the public. He is being guidod
by Caynor's decision which his advisers
say is law at present. The sheriff says
that any person intsrferring with
passengers who refuse to pay a second
fare, will be arrested. The authorities
are preparing to swear a thousand
deputies.

nominate and re-elect Roosevelt for the

said he has no doubt about the nomination
and don't believe that the labor organiz
ations are against it.
He said the people recognized that the
President was sincere in his determin
ation not to accept, but the sentiment
was so overwhelming that he must be

Moll, an old time surgeon, who has made
a long residence at this place, was found
dead at his home here today, He had
shot himself in the head. He was de
