JAMESTOWH EXPOSITION
Northfork. Va., Aug 13 Something
now under the eun it the "Water Belt
Line" that has just been projected as
at a means of transportation between
the Jamestown Exposition grounds and
the several cities and points of interest
around Hampton Roads and Tidewater
Virginia. The "belt line" on land, by
steam or trolley cars, is a familiar
institution in many cities, but here for
the first time has been organized a
water belt line, boats instead of cars
being used. Mr. H. F. McQarvice. now
of New York, is at the head of the
company. Mr. McGarvie. well known at
former exposition as an oricinator of
novel concession ideas, on a recent visit
to the exposition cities conceived the idea
of establishing the Watar Rait T in.
The picturesque and historic Interest of
a water trip to the Exposition grounds
appealed to him, and after a survav of
the territory he perceived the possibilities
of such a belt line and acted Dromotlv
upon the suggestion.
Splendid observation steamers will be
run on this novel route. Each steamer
will carry about 1600 passengers with
out crowding. A regular schedule of trips
will be made, the boats starting from
Portsmouth, the Norfolk Navy Yard,
Newport News Old Point Comfort,
Fortress Monroe and other historic points
enroute, and completing the one-way
trip at a fine pier to be built out into
the waters of Hampton ttoads directly
in front of the Exposition site. Boats will
run every half hour. A unique and
valuable features of tha
coupon tickets on these trips, giving the
passenger the privilege of disembarking
at any or all of tha stoDDincr nlacet
mentioned and taking the next boat or
any boat later in the day. This will give
opportunity for seeing all the sights, The
round trip to the Exposition in this
manner will be full of excitement.
These Water Belt Line trips are to be in
no sense on the order of the average
cheap excursion," where the riffraff and
and the bobtail of humanity usually take
possession of the boat; on the contrary
they will appeal to the best class of
people, no liquors being sold aboard and
no rowdyism being permited
The "Water Belt Line" is so.named be
cause of the fact that the steamers leav
ing the company's wharf on their daily
schedule, every hour, will make a complete
circuit of the points of interest in and
about Hampton roads.
Besides the regular trips, the coin .ony
is planning to have numerous excursions
to such places as Jamestown Island, York
town and other points of historic inteie-.t
in and around Tidewater, Virginia.
At Yorktown, where Lord Cornwall)
surrendered to George Washington, is a
beautiful monument erected by the gov
ernment to commemorate the great vict
ory. There stands the first custom house
ever opened in the United States. The
ruins of the old church built in 1660 are
still to be seen.
Of equal interest is the trip up the
James river, on the way to Richmond, to
Jamestown Island, where the first English
settlement was made. Here can be seen
the ruined church tower and the old grave
yard with its historic tombs and inscrip
tions. The peninsula between the James
and the York rivers has been the scene
of more bloody conflicts than haveoccured
on any territory of similar size in the new
World.
