Mr. Hooper of Midvale has raised 1 7
crops of peaches in 1 8 years, and his
success gives him authority to Ulk of
peaches. He says his orchard is at the
mouth of a cove where there are cool
breezes every night, and no frost. In fact
it takes a freeze to get a frost, he says.
His theory is that cold air of the moun
tains being heavier than the air In the
valleys, hurts rather than helps the trees
and the fruit The air in the valleys
heats, he says, and is constantly stirring.
In the valleys the thermometer registers
20 degrees less in winter and summer
than in the mountains, he says, Mr.
Hooper advises against the planting of
peach trees on high or low ground and
advocates planting on medium ground.
The Umatilla-Morrow county fair com
mission will hold a meeting for the pur
pose of making further arrangements for
the holding of the district fair in Pendleton
from September 24 to 29.
President Cohen and the other members
of the commission are now seeking a
suitable person to take charge of the
management of the fair, it being the de
sire to ArnrA rtmi rnmnmtmnt rrmn tn
serve in the capacity of superintendent.
It is possible a selection may be made
soon.
"Farmers around Prescott are harvest
ing 30 bushels of fall grain this season,'
said Robert Burns, agent of the O. R. &
N. Spring grain is running pretty light
but as only about 20 percent of the
acreage was seeded to spring wheat the
loss will be significant as far as the total
yield is concerned.
About $50,000,000 in cash has been
paid to San Francisco policy-holders to
date by the Are insurance companies.
The larger part of this sum has gone to
wholesale merchants and downtown re
tail business men and capitalists who
filed early proofs of loss and whose claims
were easily adjusted. A large increase in
payments is expected by September 1,
the additional 60 days given the comp
anies on account of the extention of
time for filing proofs of loss expiring Aug.
18.
American and English companies have
paid almost all of the $50,000,000. The
German and other foreign insurance
companies having found, for the most
part, temporary protection from liability
behind the earthquake and . other finely
written clauses.
DRINKS FLY POISON AND DIES
The 2-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs.
McQueen, who reside on West Webb
Street in Pendleton, died last evening
about 9 o'clock from the effects of drink
ing some fly poison about 2 o'clock in the
afternoon. The bowl containing the
poison was left where the tittle fellow
could reach it and when discovered he
had swallowed a large portion of the
liquid.
About on hour afterwards a physician
was called who found the baby inclined to
be sleepy, but otherwise in a normal con
dition. He gave him some medicine to
counteract the poison and went out into
the country to see another patient, think
ing the baby was in nn danger whatever.
Latir in the evening, when it was seen
that the baby was sinking, another doctor
was called, but his efforts to save the
child were in vain.
Twenty year battle
"I was a looser in a twenty year battle
with chronic piles and malignant- sores,
until I tried Bucklen's Arnica Salve;
which turned the tide, by curing both,
till not a trace remains," writes A. M.
Bruce, of Farmville, Va. Best for old
Ulcers, Cuts. Burns and Wounds. 25c
at Newlin Drug Co.
