Wasnirgton. U. C. July 81. Great in
terest is manifested in naval circles in the
British battleship Freadnought, which is
fast neiring completion and will evidently
rhake a record in shipbuilding. The tei-
iffc guns have been mounted and
x mor plate protection to the barbettes
has been put in placs. It is expected that
the entire armament will be in place with-,
in a few days and that the vesse! will be
ready for her steam trials in September.
If this program is carried out the battle
ship will be undergoing her trials in less
than one year since the first keel plates
were laid. The authorities at Portsmouth
have carried out the orders of the Admir
alty and have absolutely refused to per
mit anyone, naval officers or civilian, to
go on board the ship without special per
mit. The remarkable result obtained by the
British government in the building of this
battleship, the largest afloat, in such a
?TWt space of time speaks well for gov
ernment construction. The recent race
between the United States battleships
Louisana and Connecticut, in which the
contract vessel was finished before the
goverr.men yard product, is still a matter
of discussion, and it is tre opinion that a
further test under such conditions would
be entirely favorable to the government
builders over commercial yards.

TORPEDO BOATS NOT WANTED
i: .: .... V , ,
(8crlpp New Association)
Norfolk, Vs.. July 81. It begins to look
as If nothing would bs don by th Navy
Department toward ssnding th torpedo
boat :tationd her at present, to the
Asiatic station. It was originally planned
that these boats, soms six In number.
should leave her ar:y in April, and
everything wa in readiness for th long
voyage: that is, everything but th pr-,
sonnet for the boat. It ha been found
next to impossible to obtain th officer
and men for th protracted tour of duty '
which i necessary in order to train ihsm
for th long voyage, much of which must
be under tow. Now comes th eugges
tion from th Asiatic station that it might
bs just as wall to keep th torpedo boat
at horn, sines they ar really not urgent
ly required In far Eastern waters, where
their presence with th fleet would some
what retard the cruising program, and
where they would have to lie in ordinary
at Cavite much as they now remain at
this port. It is possible, therefor, in
view of these difficulties, that th torpedo
boat will stay in horn water, although
it is a part of th strategic program that
there shall be at the Asiatic station, in
readiness for need of them, a flotilla of
torpedo boats.
