London. July 28 The recent discoveries
made by the expedition under the aus
pices of the British School of Archaeology
in Egypt, founded by Prof. Petaie, are of
more than ordinary importance and inter
est. The greater part of the work was
done in the land of Goschen in which the
Isrealites dwelt during their prosperity
under the vizorship of Joseph, and also
where, during their bondage they built the
store cities for Pharaoh. There was also
another problem to be solved. Between
2600 and 1600 B.C. Egypt was over
run by a horde of Asiatic conquerors
known as the Hyksos. Having subjugat
ed Egypt, they built a city in the fertile
land of Goschen, which they called Av
aris. This city has never been discover
ed, but Prof. Petrie has found the re
maines of a camp city at Tel-el-Jehudi-yah.
Another important discovery was
the finding of the second store city built
by the Israelites and cailed Ramses. It
was identified by its ruins at Tel-el-Ret-hh
"P1 ruins of the tsr.p'.s built by
the Jewish high priest Onias, who fled
from the persecutions under Antiochus
Epiphanes, were found in a mound on the
west side of Tel-el-Jehudiyeh. Many im
portant and valuable antiquities were un
earthed by the exploring party and are
now on exhibition at the University Col
lege, in this city, where they will remain
to the end of the month. The work of
the school has been remarkably success
ful during the past year.

Hinnan D. Cook, one of the best known
engineers in the employ of the Northern
Pacific, has disappeared. He was one of
party of fishers along the Yellowstone
river. The party scattered along the
stream during the day and Cook failed
to appear at the evening roundup, and
cannot since be found. It is believed he
s drowned.

The first artesian well in the Rogue
river valley has been sunk by Mr. Pellett,
near Talent. It is 804 feet deep, 8,
inches in diameter. The water is of ex
cellent quality, very cold, and rises four
feet above the surface in a solid stream

A movement has been started by the
local business men, backed by prominent
liticians in the Yakima valley, to secure
an appropriation for a wagon bridge across
the Columbia here says the Kennewick

towns like Pasco and Kennewick will have

Q. W. Andrews has sold 20 acres of

Water Power and Railway Company for
$4000. The new branch road now under
construction from Cedarvilla toTroutdala
runs along one side of the property, which
has a frontage on the Base Line of about

way company intends to make that point

Brooklyn. July 28 By virtue of the
increase of the limit of cost allowed by
the Naval Appropriation act, work will
now be possible on the naval colliers pro
posed to be built. This increase allows
an expenditure of 1.500,030 on each coll
ier, and the work will be done without
further delay at the Brooklyn navy yard
and the Mare Island Navy Yard. The
machinery for the colliers is already un
der construction here. The colliers will
not only carry coal to the ships away
from the base of supplies but will be des
ignated so as to transport oil, which is a
material as much needed as fuel. Ac
comodations will also be provided for
ammunition and other ordnance stores,
and there will be some arrangements for
transporting to home ports the sick and
wounded officers and men. This latter
feature is an important one. and has long
been urged as a provision which should
be made by the government both in times
of peace and war. This latter feature
