Why go to Alaska. Tonopoh or Dyke
looking for gold when there's plenty of
it right here in Baker county and within a
stone s throw if the county court house,
as you might say?
Intense excitement wa created yester
day when it leaked out that for two weeks
past Baker City people had been quietly
investigating a well known camp in Mor
mon Basin some 55 or 40 mile from
her and about hjf way between Ourkee
and Malheur City. Additional new was
received Tuesday on the strength of which
eight Baker City people, including Messrs.
Platu, Nash and Wagnr struck out for
th new camp in a hurry in order to get
their stakes up on the new ground.
The report is almost as sensational as
was the finding of gold in California in
1849.

seem that close to King's mine in Mor
mon basin, which is reached through Dur
kee and the Rye Valley camp, a 50-foot
ledge of free-milling gold ore was opened
up two or three weens ago and has since
been considerably developed. It is said
that the ore averages between $600 and
$1000 to the ton and that it is simply a
world beater. Men working with arastra
can grind out $100 a day each on easy
time. Besides the party that left here
yesterday morning others are fitting out
for the new camp, which may almost be
said lies in Baker City's dooryard. One
thing is certain, the camp is close at home
easily investigated and many properties
there already belong to Baker City and
Sumpter people. If it i possible to put
these things together and make a Cripple
Creek or Nome City out of this district
interested parties are determined to do it.
