WEATHER
Thunderstorms with damaoins wind
occured during the early part of the week
in a few localities in the northatrn
portion of the State. The rainfall attend
ing the thunderstorms was generally very
iigrit and the damaging hish winds war
confined to relatively small areas gen
erally located in mountainons sections. N
rain of consequence occured in t is west
ern counties. The temperatures ware
above normal but it was not so warm
as the preceeding Week especially in the
western counties where, as a rule t he
mornings were cloudy and the afternoons
clear.
In the eastern counties the sunshine was
bright and practically continual during the
entire week and the afternoon temDera-
tures were nearly as high as during the
preceding week but the mornines were
considerably cooler.
ANXIOUS TOR PROMOTION
ficrlppi News Association)
Washington July 24 Nsval officers on
the retired list who saw service in the
Liivii war someone hundred in numoer
are anxious to be promoted to the next
higher grade on the retired list as author
ized by the recently passed Naval Ap
propriation act This is the same kin: of
promotion as last year or two ago accord
ed to army officers. There are evidences
of impatience on the part of retired Naval
officers who feel that the Naval Depart
ment should be ready to promote them
without delay. It will take some time
however to accomplish this as each case
must be carefully examined as to the
records to ascertain whether the clai
mant is really entitled to the benefit pro
vided by law.

five uniformed companies from all parts
of the Western district. Today will be
devoted to the transaction of business
while tomorrow the grand parade will be
heldf :llowed by the various prize contests
drills, races etc., for which the interesting
program has been provided. I: is expect
ed that fully fifty uniformed companies
will be in the parade and many of them
will take part in the contests and races.

A tragic finish .
A watchman's neglect permitted a
leak in the great North Sea dyke, which
a child's finger could have stopped, to be
come a runinous break, devastating an
entire province of Holland. In like man
ner Kenneth Mclver, of Va.xeboro. Me.,
permitted a little cold to go unnoticed
until a traggic finish was only averted by
Dr. King's New Discovery. He writes:
