CITY, AHORNiY NOT fLfCTfD
Although W. B. Sargent wis duly voted

dard at tha last meeting of the Council
he is not yet tha official attorney for tne
j city of La Grande. At the last meeting
the Council took up the deferred question
jof electing a' city attorney. It voted by

announcement of the election the Mijior
was called on to rule the question ;
whether or not he was legally elected.
Due to the fact". "that there was not a
copy oftle charter wilhin the hands of- the
mayor the ruling was done from menftry
and as the election had been held over
frum a previous meeting a d Sirgar.t
Ravinp'secLired a majority ,of votes the
mayor considered him elac'.ed.
However since then a stray copy of the
city charter has come into the Mayor's
possession and he learned that the elect
ion was illegal. . "ha charter says that the
election vf a ci.y attorney must be held
over from one regular meeting and at the
next meeting if a regular one a majority
of a quorum can elct him. If tli2 next
meeting is a special one it takes a maj
ority of the council.
Now last Wednesday's meeting was an
adjiiorned meeting and it necessattd five
votes to elect Sargent.
The question will be taken up at the
next regular meeting which is August first
and at that time a majority of the quorum
can elect him.
