Railroads are hungry for ties. Accord
ing to a report published by the United
States forest service, railroads of
this country purchassd more than 80,000
000 cross tiss in the year 1905. Of this
aggregate 47 consisted of oak and 22
of pine ties. Of pine ties used the south
ern states furnished 81, and Rocky
Mountain district 10 or oak ties, ths
csntral states supplied 64, the southern
states 33 and the North Alantin states
2. Preservative treatment was given
about 10 of the total number of ties
bought last year.

smoothed down by pruning trees so the

passing along the streets and by cutting
and removing the grass and weeds that
are unslightly or may bs cause of fire.

Annapolis July 20 For the first
time the naval engineering experimenta
station is to have money enough at its
disposal to carry Jut the purpose of its
founder. This station is located on the
Naval Academy grounds, where a large
building is now course of construction for
it. The building will be filled with al
sorts of darks, mechanics and draftmen
and for carrying on investigations. The
latter work will cost about $25,00q
during the next twelve months. The
program of inquiry has not yet been out
lined, but the initial experiments will he
applied to the turbine as & problem in
marine propulson.

outing and athletic games of the Catholic
Mutual Benevolent Association which will
taks place at Luna Park this afternoon,
will be of particular interest owing to the
fact that William Sherring, the famous
Canadian runner, who won the historic
Marathon race at the recent Olympic
games in Athens, Greece, will be present
as the guest of honor of the organization.
