I. P. DAY INJURED.
L. P. Day, a rancher, whose home s
four miles north of this city, had the mis
fortune of breaking his leg this morning
during a runaway. Ho was on his wry
to town, when his team became frightened
and started to run. Mr. Day was thrown
from the wagon falling in such
way that both bones in his
ankle was broken. He was taken to this
city, where surgical aid set the bones.
He was alone in the rig at the time of
the accident.

Ansel Bartlett, who for twenty five years
has been disbursing officer of the treasury
department, and recently deceased, was
short in his accounts to the extent of
$35,000. Bartlett's bond company car
ried his bond at $90,000.

AUTO ACCIDENT
Because he did not want to run over a
dog Dr. W. G. Cole met with an accident
this forenoon. He was going up the sojth
side of Court Street at the time, ar.d just
as he was passing in front of the Schiffler
tailor shop a stray canine ran in front cf
the machine. In trying to miss the dog
the doctor ran into a telephone pole and
partly wrecked his rra:hine. East Ori-gonian.
OVERCOME BY HEAT
Conductor Wissler. of the La Grande
division of the O R. Si N was overcome
by heat while coming from Echo to Pend
leton and was taken violently ill here.
He was sent to his home in La Granc e on
the eastbound passenger tram Saturday
evening. The water at Umatilla is very
poor at this season of the year, and it is
thought this, with the heat, caused the
