HISTORY
Of HOLEY
Holy Rollerism, as taught by "Joshau"
I Creffield, had its inceptkn at Corvallia,
Ore., in the spring of 1903. Creffield
neld campmeetings 4 oocoeedod in gut
ting a group of followers at once.
Previous to this b had been a Salva-
uoa Army worker. He was born in
Germany and was a deserter from the
Uermanarmy.
Unto night of January 4, 1904, hi
fanatical teachings had gone to such
lengths that indignant fathers end hut
bands of Corvaiiis women took him out
nd gave hir. a coat o. tar and liUir.
i nay gave eimuar tratmen( to oo ot
his male followers, C Brooks. The men
were warned mat they woid be killed
snouid 4.ney ever return to Corvallia.
Tne nexi day Creffiolo returned covert
ly and was secreted oy tne Hurt women
under the floor of tbeir borne, tier he
dispensed w.tn tits clothing, proclaimed1
himself a nrrtrthpt nf Oirl r,8 rarrir1 no
nis revoi'jng orgies in tbe name of relig
ion. -July 28, 1 904. Creffkid'a hiding place
-became Mnon ana e was taken out and
out in jaiL
In uie tnaa time, Esther Mitchell, be--cauMt
oi nis induence oer her, had been
sent to the Boys' and Girls' society. After
being kept their a few weeks, she was
sent to her fatoer's borne in Illinois. She
was not permitted to return to Oregon
until Cremeio wassent totne penitentiary.
Other women, including Mrs. O. V, Hurt,
Mae hurt and Maud Hurt, were sent to
the uisas aasylum for a abort time be
cause of Creibeld'e influence over them
while he was secreted .under tbe Hurt
residence.
Creffield, a few .days after his discov
ery, was hi ought to Portland and tried
on a statutory coacge preferred by Bur
gess E. Starr, bus band of uiitcoeii's eld
est sister, a Creffield victim.
In August, Creffield was .found .guilty.
He refused to have a lawyer and tried to
clear himself reading passages from the
Bible. Wfleo found .guilty ha mad no
effort to secure leniency, simply stating
that, like Christ, he was misunderstood.
Soon after Creffield went to prison, his
wife, Maud Hurt Crefheld, secured
divorce. There were no .further Holy
Roller demonstrations, and aeamingly the
dangerous cult was broken up. Early in
February of 1906, -Cremeld'e sentence
was commuted by .good behavior, and he
left the state prison, goinjg to California.
From there oe gal in correspondence
witn his former wue, wns had remained
with her father O. V. Hurt at Corvallia.
A reconciliation was eitectad. Creffield
returned to tne vicinity ot Corvallia and
.got a number of women and on man
Frank Hurt, tog j u a lonely spot oo the
.beach in Lincoin county. His purpose
was to found a Holy Roller colony. H
made particular efforts to secure Esther
Mitchell to his keeping, saying she was to
.be the mother of a second Christ, who
was to be born to the world.
Late in April of this year, Mitchell,
after being released from the Good Sam
aritan hospital in Portland, where he had
been .confined with an attack of measele,
.declared to close friends his intention of
killing Creffield. He told several persons
Hod had told him to remove the Holy
I Roller. from the earth for ruining his sis
ters. About May 1 Mitchell went to
Albany in search of Creffield. While
there he saw Maud Hurt Creffield, and
by following her learned that Creffield
was in Seattle. The Holy Roller prophet
hadone there supposedly for the pur
pose of raising funds or the camp on the
.coast.
May J, early in the morning Creffield
and Maud Hurt .Creffield. whom he had
remarried, started down town to do
om shopping. A they passed down
First avenue. Mitchell stepped suddenly
behind Creffield and shot him dead.
Ester Mitchell at one denounced the
act, and seemed to car nothing as to
the fate of her brother. She maintained
this attitude throughout his trial.
July 10, after being pn trial for 21
days. Mitchell was acquitted by a jury
in the superior court, after an hour and
25 mi iute of deliberation.
July 1 1. about 4 o'clock in the after
noon, Esther Mitchell, at the instignation
of the widow of Holy Roller Creffield,
treacherously shot and killed her brother
George in the depot at Seattle.
