CONDUCTOR'S STORY
yonuucior r ranK Baker, who was ; in
charge of the train on which Grow was
engineer, said, when spe iking of the acci
dent,"We had loaded our train and pu'l
ed on a spur just above Perry, an J I hid
gane down to the office to get my orders.
After number two pulled through -which
was 2:09 I received orders to take my
train out, and accompanied by James
Mimnaugh of the Grande Ronde Lumii
Company, started back to the train. On
the way 1 noticed a man apparently asl&ep
and on lowering my lanUrrt discovered it
was Dave. I tried to call him. and then
noticed blood. Another glance proved to
us that he was dead "
"I believe that the approach of number
two had awakened r.im and in getting up
had been hit by a step of the train as the
bruises indicate that. One of my crew
told him him when he lay down at bis
engine's side, that he should not do so.
Dave replied tiia. he was going to sleep.
Of course he must have done so the
man was not drunk. Judging from where
he first lay earlier in the evening and
from where his glove lay lie must have
been thrown about thirty feet by the blow.
