' All persons ar notified that the ordin
ances pertaining to nussance and the
cleaning up of garbage, filth, decaying
tubstances, privies, and cess pools, will
after this dste be strictly enforced. After
24 hours notice the city officers have the
right to clean up' tii streets and alleys
abutting on any and all property and a
lien for the expense may b taken
against th property. Th same law
applies to the cleaning of filth and rub
bish from lots and blocks. '
The penalty runs a high as $60 fin or
25 days imprisonment. Under th ordin
ance no manuie or garbage is allowed to
be placed, in the alley from March 1st to
November 1st each year.
All persons are ar warned not to
throw' any paper, vegetable or fruit peal
ings or other refuse on the sidewalks
gutters or streets.
It is the intention to have a regular,
scavenger officer appointed who will in
the first instance contract with the owners
for cleaning up or notify them so they
may clean up themselves. If no action
is taken by the party who is notified to
clean up, the city will clean up and file a
lien on the property ar.d a warrant will
be placed in the hands of the Marshal
for the arrest of person who refjs or
neglect to clean up, on conviction before
the Recorder, the fine will be from $6 to
$50.
It is not a desirable task for the ad
ministration to' invoke th Criminal law
against our good citizens but that is what
is required of us when other remedies

A BEET
Beet growers will welcome the advent
or th beet loader. This machine was
invented by Mr., Chambers of Summer-
vllle who placed the contract for its con
struction with th La Grande Iron Works,
where S. D. Hill has just completed it.
The primary purpose of the machine, is
to facilitate-the loading of the beet after
it is pulled and; topped. The custom in
pulling beets "Is. to. putl-i rows on a side
and throw them in piles, thus bringing 8
rows into one long series of piles. Form
erly, as everyone knows, the beets were
loaded from these piles to wagons by
means of the prong shovel. Mr. 'Cham
bers has come to the front with this new
piece, of mechanism and ..from )io'w on,
without a doubt, a boy to drive 'ibe'team
and a man to manipulate the levers will
do the.work, better, quicker and much
easier. ,
The principle is simple. A frame, re
sembllngairoad . scraper,- carries a fork
controlled by lever in such a way that
the man in charge df the levers can dump
the fork ' on approaching a pile of beets
and after this fork has passed under the
heap, he tilts'the" fever and throws the
beets, dirt and all on an elevator. Tne
lever is then lowered for tne next diIo.

It is easily seen, hat ' from fifty to
sixty acres can b picked up cleaned
and loaded in a day. As the fork is
wide, enough to pick up two rows of piles,
this means that s xt.en rows of beets
