The city council met several hours last
evening and transacted considerable busi
ness among which was the passing of an
ordinance empower ing a contract to be
iet with Glass St Prudhomm of Portland
for providing the necessary blank books
and filing cases to facilitate the adoption
of the new system of keeping city records,
the amount of the contract being $519
Two ballots were taken with a view o
electing a city attorney. Jos. F. Baker in
each instance received four votes of the
six councilman present and W. B. Sargent
two. Five votes being a majority, no
election, and the matter was deferred until
the next meeting. '
The 0, R. St N. Co., in a view of enlar
ging their shops and yards petitioned as
follows, which was refered to the Street
Committee.
"Your petitioner respectfully shows,
submits and petitions:
That it is the owner of Blocks 1 29,
130. 131. 132, 133 and 134 of Champ
Iain's Addition to La Grande, with the
exception of Lot 1 1 of said Block 129 and
Lot 3 of saidgQIock 134; that it purposes
to enlarge its roundhouse, its machine
shops and other buildings necessary to
handling of its business in said city. which
enlargement will necessitate the occupant
of said Blocks and the intersecting "streets
Ash Street. Birch Street and Chestnut
Street, between Jackson Avenue and the
present boundary of tie station grounds
of the petioner, and Monroe Street bet
ween Fourth Street and North Depot
Strtet, and Fourth Street between Pal
mer Street and said north line of the
station grounds, and Harrison Street be
tween Second and Third Streets, be de
creed to be vacated and abandoned. Said
streets are not now used by the public
and there will be no inconvenience to any
one except the owners of the two lots above
excepted, which will be damaged by said
proposed vacation and which damage
your petitioner is willing to pay an reason
able amount.
Also, your petitioner prays for a fran
chise granting it the right and privilage
to construct on a part of Palmer Street
East of Third Street, a side-track, and
also, to construct necessary side-tracks
on Harrison Street from the East line of
Second Street westerly on said Harrison
Street between said East line of Second
Street to the West line of First Street
and your petitioner will ever pray.

Bids were opened as follows for the
disposition and removal of the old city
councilroom and jail. B. W. G randy
$122.60, "J. L. Mars $189. Wm, Thomp
son $180, John Wilson $200. Referred
to Ways and Means Committee.
Several bids were received for the in
stallation of three steel cells in the Fire
Department building. The committee
was given until the next meeting to in
vestigate minutely the character of the
respective bids which range from $400
to $700.
An ordinance was passed granting the
O. R. St N. Co., a franchise on Mariam
street. This is to be used for a side track
to the new saw mill to be built by the
Palmer Lumber Co.

nn ordinance was passed , assigning
the duties of the several council commit
ties, which will be published in a few
days.
The matter of taking up the ordinance
providing fdr $i.O0O saloon license, which
was vetoed by the Mayor, was defered
until the next meeting,

HARVEST WAGES
The machine men of Eureka flat dis
trict have settled on the following prices
for labor in the harvest fields: Forkers
per day, $3; header punchers. $3.50;
hoedowns, $2.60; seperator men, $5;
engineers. $5; spike pitchers, $2.50;
loaders, $2.50. The prices for threshing
in that district will be 7 cents per bushel
for clean grain and 8 for foul. Tnere is
a scarcity of good men for the harvest
fields. Harvesting will commence by the
10th inst Athena Press.
