as then La urande, from the Missouri
river. Among these Easterners was
Grandma Palmer and her family, and in
speaking of the event Grandma said this
morning, "It is just forty-one years ago
tomorrow since we made our first ap
pearance in La Grande. Everything was
in readiness for the first real fourth of
July celebration ever held in La Graide.
We had no more than left our immigrant
train than we were invited to ride in the
"liberty wagon" which invitation .we
promptlacceptecT In this wagon were
TltMS girls' representing every state in the
Union, and were hauled about the
little village, located where Old Town now
stands, and the three hundred inhabitants
were out, dressed in their best and bent
on having a grand celebration. We cer
tainly had an interesting fourth, and in
fact we were surprised at the complete-

Mr. M. Baker, still residing in the Old
Town, was speaker of the day and held
his little audience of pioneers in rapt at
tention. General Stevens, lately deceas
ed, was also a speaker."
"Yes the celebration was the same as
it will be tomorrow; of course we had no
hose cart races, and a few of the modern
amusements, were lacking but we had a
patriotic little Fourth and when evening
came we were tired and happy, and rea
lized that out here in pioneer Oregon in
1865 people had all the enthusiasm and
patriotism that marked the East at that
time.' .
The speaker wa, fifty-two years old at
that time, and today is hale and hearty,
and is awaiting anxiously . for Thursday
morning when she will take the train for
Elgin and be present there on Pioneers
Day, as no Pioneer day is complete with
out Grandma Palmer.
