GRANGE ITEMS
The last regular meeting of the Blue
Mountain Grange No. 345, was to have
Ijeen Sisters day but owing to an over
sight on the part of the master it was not
generally understood and consequently
not such a success as our sisters are cap
able of making it, but after all they had
an excellent program and such a dinner
as only Grange Hall Sisters can prepare.
After dinner and while we were all too
full for utterance, they gave us such a
roasting that we all knew we had been
somewhere.
The high classed articles read, talks and
recitations were sucn as to inspire one
to better thoughts and actions and goes
far toward placing woman in her rightful
sphere among the nations of the earth.
With such helpers as these, the future
destiny of the Grange is surely bright.
As the next regular meeting day will
be on the 4th of July there will be no
meeting until the regular meeting
the third Saturday in July, which will be
young folk's day. A pleasant and profit
able time is anticipated.
The Grange movement in this county is
gaining some.
I organized a very promising Grange in
Alicel last Saturday with ' 32 charter
members. Following are the officers
elected: W. M. R. F. Case, W. O. Chas.
Playle, Steward M. Vanhousen, Lecturer
Mrs. Etha Wallsingeri Asst. Steward F.
W. Kidwell, Chaplain B. F.Webb, Treas
urer L. McKennon, Sec'y Mrs. Celia
Playle, Ceres Mrs. James Mass, Pomono
Mrs. F.W. Kidwell, Flora Miss Bertha
Moore, Lady Asst. Steward Mrs. M. Van
housen. Gate Keeper W. R. Ledbetter,

, Master Blue Mountain Grange.
WORK fOR BROOKLYN NAVY YARD
(Horlpps Nnvs Association)
Brooklyn, N. Y. June 29 The situation
at the Brooklyn Navy Yard will be slight
ly improved by the fact that, beginning
with Monday next the Bureau of Yards
and Docks will have a slightly increased
fund available for the employment of
certain yard workmen, watchmen, etc.,
who had to be laid off on account of the
exha stbn of the funds at the disposal of
the Bureau.
Much trouble and annoyance was in
curred by reason of the discovery made
in the preser.t fiscal year that there was
not enough to purchase fuel and maintain
a watch force and street cleaners at the
navy yard. The situation was not helped
in the least by the refusal of Congress
to appropriate any money by way of de
ficiency. After next week it will be pos
sible to take on most of the men who
furloughed at Brooklyn and care will be
taken to see that the annual appropria
tion does not become so reduced as to em
barrass the Department in its manar -ment
of t e yard forces. At the same
time " the strides,
will have to be practiced.

WAR AGAINST CONSUMPTION
(Scrlppa News Association)
Nashville, Tenn, June 29 An import
ant meeting has been arranged for this
evening at Watkins' Hall by the Com
mittee on Organization and By-Laws of
the Anti-Consumption League, with a
view of stimulating the general interest
in the problem of making determined war
against consumption, which yearly de
mands an enormous number of victims.
, Dr. W. J. Morrison will be chairman of
the meetiug and many prominent physi
cians and others will deliver addresses,
all dealing with the subject of consump
tion and the best means of exterminating
the scourge. It is confidently believed
that this movement will result in inesti
mable good to this and other commurties,
for already some of the similar towns of
the state have begun to effect similar
organizations.
