Last night's rain storm was simply an
ssurance of good weather for the Fourth.
It also me? ns more sugar beets. "It never
hurt a bit"
A large saw mill and a vinegar factory
and a record breaking crop will tend to
make La Grande the most prosperous city
in the s ate.
We landed the big saw mill, have the
big vinegar factory and are now looking
for other industries. La Grande will be
the scene of much activity this year.
When a town one get started off
right, it don't take long to become quite a
city. La Grande is rapidly laying the
foundation for a city of 10,000.
The State school proposition is a eood
one, but why not make an effort to get
it located at La Grande? La Grande is
the proper place for a state echool and
the proper effort will bring it here.
It is understood in this connection that
parties interested in the rebuilding of San
Francisco have already began to arrange
for large amounts of hardwood flooring
and finishing stock for the Phoenix City.
Every man, woman and child who sees
fit to remain in La Grande on the Fourth
are assured entertainment for every
moment in the day. There will be some
thing doing all day and a grand band and
fire work at night
The present week will witness the
holding of an interesting conference at
Hampton institute in Virginia when ques
tions of practical moment to negroes will
be discussed. The delegates will be
colored people, and the majority of them
farmers. Agricultural topics will, there
fore, be chiefly considered, but houses
and hygiene will also have a leading place.
There is surely much to hope for in the
future of a race that concerns itself with
problems like these.
Time works out curious results. Every
adult remembers the great agitation in
the presidetnial election of 1896 over
the silver question and the quantitative
theory of money. Now at the end of ten
years, the per capita supply of money in
the United States is about $32, as against
$21.60 then. This advance in the supply
of 49 in money, has been accompanied
by an increase in commodity prices which
are now 40, 'f higher than on the average
as shown by Dun's index. ' And silver,
the metal, has likewise advanced 45,'t- in
selling price. Of course it is to be noted
that the immense increase in the currency
supply consists largely of gold and of
national bank notes secured by govern
ment binds, in contrast to having circula
tion increase through the free coinage of
silver. The experience of the decade
cited goes far to demonstrate the correct
ness of the theory thu the per capita
supply of sound mhney involves advanc
ing prices of labor and commodities, and
therefore increased "prosperity." It has
certainly oporated to the advantaee
all except those who live upon the income
from invested funds, for their bonds njw
yield only about the same return on each
1000 of par value that they did ten
I years ago. whils other prices have ad
vancad nearly 60 'r. But when is th
alvanc going to stop?
Seattle is letting nothing go undone
which will in anyway concern the success
of the Alaska-Yukon Exposition. The
site has been selected and the manag
ment his announced that no liquors will
be sold within the Exposition grounds.
This is a new move in the right dire tion.
If any city in the nation can make a suc
cess of an Exposition, Seattle is ce-tainly
the one to march on to victory.
Now is the time for parents to consign
that toy cap pistol to the stove. Already
one life has been sacrificed to the pistol
demon in the state.
A patriotic observance of the Fourth
of Ju y should not be discouragrd. The
boys and girls should be permitted to
have a good time and a noisy time, but
let the grown-ups exercise a little com
mon sense. Let them keep the deadly
toy pistol and the treacherous giant fire
cracker from the little folks and probably
we shall be able to get along with the
rest of the explosives with only a small
death and accident list.
