Will it be Roosevelt and Bryan
1 908? It looks that way now but it is
quite olways in advance, to fix up politi
cal states with any degree of certainty of
their bslng carried out. There is no
question but what Mr. Bryan is the
strongest man today in the Democratic
party and President Roosevelt is the idol
of the people irrespective of party lines
arid it Is quite possible that the Republi
cans backed by a generous general senti
ment will demand that the President
stand for re-election, The people want
actors these days and not grand stand
players and Roosevelt certainly accomp
Iishes what he undertakes and sc far
t seems that nothing is too large for him
to undertake.

The house of representatives has
thirteen millionalriet. Five from New
York, tWe from Pennsylvania and two
from Illinois. John E. Andrus of New
York leads the list with $30,000,000;
next is William B. McKinley of II inois
with $12,000,000 and William
Randalph Hearst claims the third place
with $10,000,000. The house has not
been the place for retired millionaries
while the senate has always been a home
for retired American men of millions.
The wealthiest man of the senate is W. A.
Clark whose friends claim him the richest
man in the world. Oregon is not repre
sented by men of millions in that august
assembly of money and brains, but
should statement No. 1 hold good as per
ante-election pledges the state will have
Mr. Jonathan Bourne Jr. who has ex-
pections. The trend of recent years has
been to select men for Senators who en
umerated their wealth by the millions. Re
presentativas have been nearer the choice
of the people. While extreme wealth has
not been a barrier to the house of repre
sentatives still it has not been a necessary
quality. Some of the most efficient legis
lators have been compartively poor hut
they were workers. Only thirteen out of
the entire house is a very small percent
age and well sustains our democratic
pretensions. It is admitted that extreme
poverty is an inpenetrable barrier. This is
not to be lamented. It is a well estab
lished fact that sterling business qualities
will overcome poverty even if they do not
win a fortune. Without those attributes
no man is worthy of a place, in the legie
lative halls of America.
