Varied raport hava been coming over
from Elgin way to the effect that La
Grande i backward about playing our
neighboring village. Then to strengthen
the first report came something in the
shape of a challenge, it seems that Elgin
has raised a $1000 purse to be played
for at any place La Grande will name
provided each team plays the same line
up which they had at the last game
between Elgin and La Grande. In an
interview with the manager here he said;
"We will play Elgin for any sized purse
above $500. a aeries of three games; one
here, one at Elgin and one at Pendleton
or any other neutral ground Elgin may
name. Ul coarse we win piay me team
man for man which we used in defeating
Elgin last time and Elgin must have the
same team in the field that they had
that day. Should this series be arranged
there will be something doing in a base
ball way as Elgin has been confident all
a ong that they naa tne oecti r
team. The fact that La Grande was
forced to cancel a game with Elgin has
inforced their belief that we are slightly
afraid of them. Fans are looking forward
to these games with great interest
A GCGu GAiiE ThE FOURTH
Manager Heisner informs us not he has
yet secured a first class team to play here
the Fourth, but is in coraespandencg with
snveral of the best teams in the country,
and assures the fans that he will have a
strong team here on that date. W.iitman
college is negotiating for a game. Al says
he will gat only the best and is going 'o
take his time in making the choice.
NO GAME TOMORROW ;
There will be no game tomorrow, Ma n
ager Heisner is devoting all his time to
get a good game the Fourth and for this
reason he is unable to get a satisfactory
team here tomorrow.
SOMETHING DOING WEDNESDAY?
What's going to happen Wednesday?
Why at four o'clock sharp Banker Geo.
Cleaver will lead his aggregation of pen
artists, pill makers, clerks, attorneys and
land orficemen on to the diamond and de
monstrate that these experts in their in
dividual vocations know either more or
less about the national game than the ag
gTegation that will be piloted out by
Jeweler Seigrist
Businessmen will forget their business
on Wednesday attend the great ball game
between the North Side and South Side.
ine-up will be practically the same
nounced for '.he game that was to
been played on Decoration Day but
ostponed. All the places of busi
ness will close their doors at four to give
every one an opportunity to witness this
great contest, for a great contest it will
surely be. Watch for further announce
ments. FIRE-FIGHTERS IN HARDTRAINING
The different hose companies of the
city are getting ready for various races
that will be held the Fourth, by taking
cross coun try jogs. The whole squad is
covering about a mile every evening and
when the fire-fighters return to the
'Training Quarters" at the Commercia
Club fiey are generally well spent. A plunie
and an extra supply of witch hazel, how
ever soon revives them.
The boys are confident that any hose
team that beats them will have to go some
and judging from the interest taken in the
practice work there will be an interesting
tournament here the Fourth in connection
with the other amuseme ts.
