S3 the legislature settle the . Senatorial
question on the first ballot. We have
become so accustomed to 40 day con
tests that anything short of that will be
an agreeable surprise. The wishes of
the people have been so clearly expressed
that we do not believe the Legislature
will dare to juggle with the election
in the interests of any candidate. The

Kansas has come to the front with
another freak. This time it is a man
who refuses an appointment as United
States Senator from that state. He as

"hoodooed"
Five of the nine superintendents of the
public schoois in New York are reported
to be using simplified spelling, and some
of the school principals have informed
their pupils that the right way to spell
certain words can be left to common
sense rather than to ths s-elling books.
This ought to give the delinquents in
orthography a chance to differ with the
schoolmaster occassional!.
The stove foundry at the Oregon pen

by the substitution of a jute mill, such as
operated in Washington state penitentiary
at Walla. Grain sacks made by convict
labor in this state would greatly lessen
the cost of sacks to the farmer. Besides

One of the very sensible things done at
the recent election was tee adoption of an
amendment to the State Constitution
giving to cities and towns the privilege
of amending their charters by a vote of
the people at any time.
Absorbed in business, pleasure and
the petty affairs of everyday life, the
people of Havana completely overlooked
the fact that the third Tuesday in May
was the day set apart by the astrologers
for the destruction of their city.
The c.ty means business about the
house numbering ordinance, and property
owners will save themselves expense by
numbering at once. If you do not know
your number call at the Observer office
with your lot and block number and the
name of your street and we will find
your number for you.
With the county gradually working out
of debt and the school district only about
three months behind in the payment of
its warrants, the tax-payer begins to see
some day-light in public affairs. It is to
be hoped that these branches of the pub
lic machinery may continue to improve
in condition until the last vestige of in
debtedness is wiped out. The time when
the people will be satisfied to have towns
counties and school districts dragging
along under a ruinous load of indebted
ness, has passed, and they now demand
that public officials shall make a show ¬
ing each year along this l.ne "to the good"
The county and school district seem to
be headed the right way. Union Repub

A LITTLE TALK ON
ICE CREAM SODA
NOT B ETTER THAN THE BEST
BUT BETTER THAN THE REST ,
To maintain the reputation we have acquired for supplyidg the needs of our
many patrons in every department, a reputation we point to with pardon
able pride, we want, now, to advise you that we have opened our soda
fountain with a new line of crushed fruits and fruit juice which excel any
which we have ever had, and while we may occasianly find a party who
has never tried one of our delicious ICE CREAM SODAS we find a hun
dred who have, and do, and always will, because they want the best and
appreciate a fine article. We have some new flavors this year which are
going to be of universal favor on account of their delicate flavors. Hoping
you will kindly favor us with an early call, so we may show you,
