Those who wr fortunate enough to
be present yesterday at the entertain
ment given by the Neighborhood Club
felt that they had been privileged to step
into a Japanese tea garden for a pleasant
hour's rest. The club rooms were to
successfully disguised with a profusion of
Japanese fans, lanterns, and great um
brellas that they rr.aie a most suitable
setting for the jolly little Jap.
The program was given entirely by the
young people, ail of whom were costume
in the Japanese flowing gown with fan
and ornament in- their hair. So well
carried Dut was the costuming that every
one believed that the American made a
very good looking Japanese and the per
formance of each member of the program
gave credit to both nations. The music
and sermon were exceptionally good and
the young musicians and orator deserve
much commendation. The duet by Helen
Currey and Olive Massee was received
with applause and delighted the guests
Among the songs was one by Kenneth
Carpy in a true Japanese style w i:h was
especially enjoyed, as was als. Helen

tune which is so seldom found in a child's
voice. Yum-Yum, Pittising, and Peep-Bo
came tottering into the room with the
typical Japanese stoop and sang their
song in such a merry manner that they
.on the hearts of ail. The drill by th
little girls, each in her kimono with her
lantern over shoulder was one of th
prett est things during the afternoon and
showed much care in its preparation, and at
the request of some late comers the little
Japs repeated their parts. After the
program the tea table was prepared and
presided over by Ali-Len and Yukai who
refreshed their guests with tea from old
Japan and the small cake so dear to the
heart of the Japanese.
A pleasant social hour was enjoyed
and all were unanimous in pronouncing it
one of the most enjoyable and unique
afternoons ever given in La Crande.
The ladies of the Five Hundred Club
spent the afternoon with Mrs. Fred Kiddle
at her home in Island City,
