SOME DETAILS Of WALLOWA MURDER
Last Monday evening in the town of
Enterprise, about 7 o'clock. "Brick"
Johnson, bartender at Fritz Olt's saloon,
was shot and instantly killed by John
Bare. . -
Bare and a number of companions had
been drinking during the day and just
previous to the tragedy "Brick" Johnson
had ordered them out of the saloon.
Bare immediately went to his home se
cured hie 50-50 rifle; before leaving his
home his wife endeavored to stop him
from taking the gun and was knocked
down a couple times by her enraged hus
band. After leaving the bouse he met
Carl Horner who tried to take the rifle
away from him but did not succeed. Bare
informing Horner that he was going down
town to give the fellows a good time. He
passed through a livery stable an told
the hostler to saddle a horse for him as
he would be back in a few minutes. Pass
ing in through the back door of Ott's
saloon. Bare came to the end of the bar
and taking deliberate aim at "Brick"
Johnson, who was sitting on the bar talk
ing to Fritz Ott, Frank Ott and Wm.
Hammock, shot him in the back of the
head, the bullet Uaring the top of
"Brick's" head off.
Bare threw another cartridge into his
rifle and passed out the back door, went
to the livery stable for horse, hostler in
formed him there was not a saddle ani
mal in barn., Bare threatened to kill
hostler, who made a flying jump over a
six foot door and escaped. Bare then
held up a boy named McAnulty who was
accompany him.
Just at this time Sheriff Blakely arrived
on the scene with a borrowed rifle and
opened fire on Bare; the third ehot
wounded the pony and upon trying to fire
fourth shot, Blakely discovered that the
magazine ' was empty and rifle . useless.
Bare dropped upon his knee, using Mc
Anulty boy for shield, drew a bead on
Blakely and told him to "hit the hike."
Bare then continued his flight on foot, and
from traces discovered next morning, it
is supposd that he passed part of the
night in a small canyon about one mile
from Enterprise,
At this place he expected to make a
stand as he had barricaded himself with
a wall of rocks.
Marshall E. W. Wagner of Joseph, was
telephoned for; he and deputy sheriff S.
D. Keltner and others sent the night in
the hills around Enterprise, but found no
trace of Bare. Tuesday morning about
nine o'clock a email posse was organized
and started on the man hunt
The posse left Enterprise about 10
o'clock Tuesday morning and made lor
the brakee of the Imnaha and Snake
river, but afer covering the ground as
thoroughly as possible they found no trace
of Bare, and Sheriff Blakely and Marsha.
Wagner returned into the valley Wednes
day evening seeking a clue whereby they
might locate the direction Bare took.
It is almost an impossible task to find
Bare with the start that he had, as he
knowe every foot of the country and if
he once reached the brakes of the Imnaha
ha would be safe from discovery for the
present. Bare has the reputation of be
ing a very cool, nervy man, also one of
the best rifle ehots in the valley; if the
posse comes up with him and he resists
several lives will be lost before he is

CHILDREN'S DAY
The Childrens Day exercise last even
ing in tne Baptist Church were a boom
success. The audiance over filled the
house. The program waa replete with
interest and held the audianea in' rant
attention from start to finish. It was
under almost insurmountable difficulty
that the work was accomplished, ae so
many of the boye and girls have, since
tne end of school, thrown off Work and
are enjoying the liberties and rest of vac
ation.
Much credit is due to Miss Lillian
Driskoll, chairman of program condidate
for her presistent and unfatimiaahla lahnr
in rendering possible the successful issues
or the evening s pleasure and profits. A
good offering waa gathered for the Miss
ionary work of the American Baptist
Publication Society.
A good offering was made yesterday by
the Baptist church in thir City, for Bap
tist work in recon struction in San Fran
cisco. All questions pertaining to health and
beauty are answered here. Makes people
feel as they felt in full blooded youth.

AMERICAN MACHINERY fOR INDIA
New York, June 18 Americans will
supply the equipment for a hydro-electric
plant to furnish power for a railroad
system and commercial enterprises in the
Cashmeie Valley in Northern India. Ten
million dollars will be expected for the
work. The plant will be situated on the
Jhelum River, which ia capable of develop
ing about 100.000 horse power. A rail
way will be built the entire length of the
valley a distance of 1 80 miles. The Jhelum
River will be deepend to prevent annual
floods. One hundred thousand acres of
rice land will be reclined and various
cities will be supplied with power.
The Cashmere Valley is full of factories
and here the famous Cashemere ahawls
are woven. Few ontsiders have been
allowed to enter the valley which ia over
one mile above the sea level. The govern
ment is independent under a Maharajah
whose annual tribute to the British
government is one horse, twelve shawl
goats and three pairs of Cashmere Shawls
In the powerhouses will be installed
twelve 1,000 kilowatt generators built
by the general Electric Company which
will be connected with the water turbines
The contracts stipulates that no piece of
machinery shall weigh more than four tons
for the reason that there is two hundred
miles of road transportation including a
lift over a mountain 8,000 feet high.
