HARRIS UND BONDS.
Percy Harris, of Cove was arrested in
this City today charged with Arson. He is
charged with having made an attempted
to burn the Cove hotel on the night of
June 10. He was given his pnllminar
examination this afternoon in Justice
Hough's Court and placed under $300
bonds to appear at the next term of cir
cuit Court, The evidence was all circum
stantial, there being nothing directly
against him.

speakini in defence of the Wester, Union
telegraph system said" The action of
San Francisco's special committee is an
outrage against our company. We did
more to assist San Francisco than any
other company organ' zation in the United
Stites .and at the stars throw open our
wires for the use of relief committees,
free of charge. We handled and are still
handling free messeges sent from San
Francisco with reference to relief work."
While it is declared that all messages
were sent subject to delay, all wires were
down for forty miles around the scene
and a small proportion of the messages
ever reached their destination. Many were
sent by mail,
Mesdames J. C. Gulling and Fred
Swaney entertained five tables of Bridge
yesterday afternoon at the home of the
latter. Mrs. M. L. Causey having the
highest number of points and honors, was
given an elegant candle stick for prize
Pine-apple sherbet, cake, and marsh
mellow float were served at the close of
the playing.

Mr. C. E. Hackman returned last
evening from a two weeks visit with
friends in Baker City.She reports having
a delightful time.
The traffic on the 0. R. & N. is so
heavy that the present number of crews
are unable to handle it. For this reason
several crews of the O. S. L. have been
making daily runs through La Grande.
Miss Emma Pickler returned this morn
ing from Lewiston where she has been
attending the Idaho State NormalSchool.
She will ' spend her vacation with her
parents Mr. and Mrs .L. A. Pickler.
County Commissioner J. M. Selder, of
Cove, is a La Grande visitor today.
There w.ll be a session of county court to
morrow to pass upon the results of the
wet and dry elections held in the county
at the recent general election.
Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Scroggin presented
the Observer office with a bouquet of
roses today sent to them from Portland
by his sisters Mesdames Clarence Jones
and Clarence Irwin. The flowers wen

Oscar Hopper while working in the 0
R. & N shops yseterday afternoon was
struck in the eye by a small piece of steel.
He immediatly saught the advice of the
company's physcians Bacon and Hall who
instructed him to go to the hospital in
Portland and he left on the evening train
It may be possible to save the sight but
the eye is badly injured.
The Observer received an invitation
this morning to be presnt with Mr. and
Mrs. Thomas McConnell Elk Grove, Calif
ornia on Tuesday afternoonJune 19 from
2 o'clock untill 6 o.clook. The occasion
being a reception given on the fiftieth
anniversary of their marriage. Mr. and
Mrs. McConnell have many friends in this
city and country who will cheerfully join
with the Observer in extending congrat
ulations and wishing them many years of
act.vity and happiness.
Every train from the west is carrying
students from various schools in and
about Portland. This morning an extra
large crowd of girls from the Weston
Normal school passed thiough enroute to
various homes. When Miss Emma Pick
ler, who is a student of that school, bade
farewell to many schoolmates, she re
ceived a rousing college yell. Not to be
outdone, a few girls in the rear end of the
car. who were returning from the Oregon
Agncultur. I College set up a fa nt but eff
ective "Rah. Rah, 0. A. C. " Schools are
closing everywhere and every day La
Grande students are returning to spend
their vacations in their home city.
UNION TO MAKE DISPLAY.
The Union Fruit Growers' Association
have announced a grand agricultuial and
stock display for this Fall, and there is
much enthusiasm over the idea. The
great success of the strawberry festival
Tuesday night gives (he people confidence
that a general fair this Fall can be made
equally successful, and they propose to
try it. The crop outlook in this section
was never better, and it is safe to say
that the fair next Fall will have one of
the finest displays ever made in Eastern
Oregon.

Joe William, on Wesnsday afternoon
took three carpels out on a vacant lot
across the track to clean. After cleaning
he rolled them up and went over town
and directed an expressman to deliver
them to the owner. When the ex
pressman arrived tie carpets were gone.
Joe has been busy ever since and as
last resort called at the Observer
with a view of trying a want ad
After hearing his story we handed him a
copy of last night's paper which contained
the aa of the party who had found them,
trying to find the owner. Joe is weiring
the smile that makes the whole world
glad.
A SUGGESTION
1 read with interest the action of the
City Council in regard to the old jail
property.
I would like to offer this suggestion.
That instead of selling the piece of prop
er y. we remove the old building and
make a I tt e park tiers. It would be in
'he middle of our little city where many
people could enjoy it.

many otiers would do so. It has been an
eyesore for a long time. Let us Jmake it
