are signs of trouble in thit city, although

General Greely, who it in commannd of
the military situation there, to put the gen
eral sanitary work in charge of civilians
instead of army medical officers, He hat
accordingly relieved from thit important
duty the army turgeon who established
and who has been maintaining the sani
tary regulations which have resulted, it
is said by medical officers, in preserving
the health of a community living under
conditions which were at all times men
acing and at any time likely to get beyond
the control of the physicians. The army
surg ons worked hard in the establish
ment of field hospitals, free dispensaries
and other aids to the public health; they
feel that they should still have charge of
the general sanitary situation in San
Francisco. The fact that this responsi
bility his baai tnnsferred to chlian
physicians has occasioned some little
feeling am mg ths army surgeons, espe
cially as there has been no occasion for
complaint and on the contrary, the work
of the army medical corps in San Fran
cisco from the day of the earthquake has
elicited the warmest praise on every side,
The heartiest commendation hat come
from San Francisco physicians, who ap
predated the value of the gratuitous work
of the army medical officers. Under the
