The La Grande National bank building
it rapidly being torn down and within a
day or two everything will be in readiness
to begin the erection of the new
edifice.
G. W. Holcomb, representing the Ore
gon Packing Company arrived in the city
this morning to intenview the fruit
growers of this vicinity.

year's work with an open meeting next
Tuesday afternoon, in their rooms in the
Commercial Club building.

F. D. McCully a merchant of Joseph
was visiting in La Grande this morning
Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Sparks came in on
the Elgin train from Elgin last evening

morning. Raymond will be the architect
of the new National Bank building which
is soon to be erected.
The members of the Senior Class of
the La Grande High School are request
ed to meet at the Commercial Club to
morrow evening at 7.30, to devise plans
for getting rid of the money on hand.
L. Couch, one of the rustling real estate
men of Wallowa county, is in the city to
day on business before the United States
Land Office. He reports everything boom-
ng and the people of that county expect
the most prosperous years ever experienc
ed. .
A large number of friends of the late
A. C. Stull and his family, gathered at
the depot this morning as a last respect
to the deceased. The body, accompanied
by Mrs Stull and hereon, was shipped to
Pennsylvania this morning where inter
ment is to be made. T. E. Bueler. a rep
resetantive of tha Brotherhood of Riilroad
conductors, will accompany the body to
Ciicago.
The La Grande Iron Works has hit up
on a novel scheme for a paper weight.
This need d article is a piece of casting
made to represent a frog. It is skillfully
casted and painted and makes a very
unique ornament as well as a usefull
article and speaks well for the skill of the
pattern maker of that shop. An example
of this croakless frog can be seen on the
editorial desk of the Obrerver.
Mrs. Laura Hooghkirk. Grand Chief of
the Rathbone Sisters of Oregon, will make
Rowena Temple an official visit Friday
June 15. A full attendance is desired.
Through the kindness of the Woodmen
the K. of P. hall was secured. In con
sequence there will be no meeting of that
order on the above date.

At three thirty this afternoon the fire
alarm was given and in a remarkably
short time Hose Company number one
was at the scene of the supposed blaze.
However no water was needed as the
cause for momentaiy excitement was
only Grandy and Russel's smoke house
emitting an extra large amount of smoke.
