Washington D. C. June 13 Taking his
cue from the situation developed at the
Wenaha forest reserve, in northeastern
Oregon, Senator Fulton has set about
having such changes made in grazing re
gulations as will give the stock of the
state in which a reserve or part of a re
serve is situated, perference over all
others. Thn forest service officials admit
that this principle is proper, and gives as
surance that it has been the steadfast
purpose to work to that end in time, but
do not indicate how many years it will
require to eliminate the outside sheep
The senator, after conference with stock
interests of his state, feels that this prin
ciple should be established at once, with
out approaching the result over a pro
longed period of elimination. He yet
hopes that the general rules will be so
modified as to give the preference to the
state's interests burdened with the re
serve withdrawal.
A determined effort is to be made by
the Orecron delegation to provide for a
careful geological survey, with reference
to artesian water, in the great central
Oregon region. Senator Fulton took the
Question uo some time airo with the Re
clamation officials, but found the rules of
this bureau forbid use of the fund for any
experimental work, where there is not
engineering assurance of success, Since
he has been working to have the exper
iment made by the Geological Survey,
from what ie known as the general
hydrographic fund. Officials of the sur
vey do not want to undertake the boring
as they have not so elsewhere, but are
ready to make a scientific survey when
ever funds will permit, by means of which
private capital may be safely guided in
boring operations. Important artesian
discoveries .have been made through
these surveys, and the effort will not be
to have such survey made of the central
southern Oregon region. The only con
tingency is the appropriation.
