The last few days poor to election it
was evident that Mr. Holmes of the Cove
could not possibly receive enough votes
to be considered in the race and not a
few voters in this city thinking it would
be a stronger stroke of policy to prevent
any possibility of'county division, voted
for Mr. Rothchild. They considered his
location as being a stronger endorsement
The election is over. Good men have
been elected ts fill the various offices and
in a few days the people will settle down
and most of them will almost forget that
there was an election The varions can
didates offered themselves to the citizens
of this county and the people made their
choice. Good men were defeated as
well as elected.
The week opened and closed showery
and cool, with an intervening period of
from two to three days with mild tem
peratures and clear skies. Tne rains on
Tuesday and Wednesday were excessive
over limited localities in the northeast
section of the State. The Umatilla River
overflowed its banks, and did considerable
damage to the streets in the city of Pen
dleton and to the bridges and fences along
its course from that city to its mouth at
Umatilla. In a few other localities in that
section, farm lands were badly washed
by heavy rains, but the good done in the
larger territory where the rains were only
moderate, much more than compensated
for the damage done in the few limited
areas where they were excessive. Fri
day morning the temperature was dan
gerously near the frost mark, both in the
eastern and western portions of the
State, but no frosts were reported. The
winds during the week generally light and
mostly from the west, but some of the
rain squalls were attended by wind
rushes of short duration.
