SOLDIERS ARC BUSY THIS YEAR
(Bcrlpps News Association)
Washington. D. C June 4. The
United States Army will not be able to
take part in any of the county fairs thit
year. There is an increasing demand for
military representation on such occasions
in all sections of the country, and hitherto
the disposition has been to gratify such
desires on the part of the people as far
as may be.
This year there is an ur.us lal demar d
for the presence of one or more of the
troops of cavalry or companies of infantry,
a preference being expressed for the cav
alry as a more" spectacular body, capable
of drawing paying crowds. This year,
however, all the cavalry, infantry, and
field artillery commands will be other
wise employed. They are to leave their
respective stations on July 1 8 for marches
to the nearest camps, where they will be
mobilized In large bodies and engage in
two or three months' exercieee, the pro
gram of operations including the militia.
This rule will be rigidly enforced, by
direction of the President, without excep
tion. The troops must leave their
stations on the day eet, and nothing will
be allowed to interfere in any way with
this program. They will be required to
remain at the camps on the work incident
thereto, for the full period designated, ''and
there will be no exception to this require
ment. For this reason the War Depart
ment is obliged to refuse to lend ' its aid
by the presence of any part of the mili
tary body at the county fairs.

Lou Dillon, just before and after the race,
the famoue trotter was "under the weath
er" at the time of the race. The session
of the Board is held at the Phoenix Hotel.

PLANT READY
Tie Lillard pumping plant on the arid
district east of here, now generally desig
nated as Lillard flat, was completed and
ed in operation last Saturday.
By kid of this pumping plant Mr. Lillard
expect' to utilize the waters of the Bal
ck slough to reclaim two thousand acres
of the richest soil in Baker county and no
one doubts the feasibility of hie undertak
ing. While the large tract of arid land
has now, practically, all been located by
an Industrous class of settlers, some of
whom are enthusiastic in the belief that
they will' be able to raise good crops
without' other than nature's supply of
moisture, there yet remaine in all prob
ability, odds and ends considered absolute
ly worthless today, that will, in yeare to
come, be dotted with thrifty homes. As
to production without irrigation there is
no doubt on favorable seasons, which
this seems inclined to be, Mr. Lillard
having now 600 acres of excellent wheat
which ie now about fifteen inches high.
