La Grande has vital interests at stake
in this election and every tax payer and
resident should look the issues squarely
in the face. An ounce of prevention is
worth a pound of cure.
In this election it is up to La Grande to
vote for La Grande's interest. Look over
your ticket carefully there are several
places where your vote may prevent
future troubles.
Unless W. W. Randall falls short in La
Grande, he will be the next Sheriff of
Union county. Thera is no reason why
he should be knifed in L Grande, and it
is up to the cour.ty seat to say whether
Mr. Randall shall come out of that place
with his party vote or to be turned down
for the sake of Keeping all the offices in
La Grande. It is up to the county seat
to make pood in this matter. Union Re
publican.
The proposed state purchase of the
Barlow toll road is said to be graft, pure
and simple. Those back of the measure
are said to hold an option on the really
worthless property for $8000. They
could then turn it over to the state and
pocket about $16,000. And we have
the portage road, with a monthly deficit
that does not need duplication. .
The men of Oregon must say whether
the women of Oregon can vote at elec
tions hereafter. A vote for the constitu
tions' amendment which gives women
the right of suffrage is a vote in favor of
a more intelligent ballot Girls in school
prove themselves more apt in good citi
zenship studies than boys of the same
grades, and women in life are more thor
ough students of social movements.
There is nothing in either sex or color by
which the quality of the voters and the
vote may be determined, but there is
much in the intelligence and morality. A
good many women do not want to vote.
and many more do. This is even so with
men. If women are handicapped in
the industrial world, the fact does not pre
vent them from being more independent
of state aid than the men. Charitable
and penal institutions are maintained al
most solely for men who receive higher
wages. Women are taxed for their sup
port in like manner as men. In many
places in the state women contribute as
much as the husband for the maintenance
of the family. It will be a pretty tribute
to their sterling worth to accord them a
privilege which men assumed for them
selves as a right. .
NOTICE
Mrs. S. Vanecar. the Hair Dresser, will
be in La Grande on June fi ipnp
fourth street, with a large stock of hair
goods, bhe will remain a few weeks.
One proposed amendment confers unon
the legislature power to propose a ronsti-
tutional convention at a single session.
So long as the people determine the
matter the legislature may safely be per
mitted to submit a proposal to vote at
one session as well as at a dozen.
Before another issue, the voters of
Union county will have expressed their
desi-es through the ballot, not only as to
who shall be their public servants, but
upon several important constitutional
amendments and laws. It is to be hoped
that each voter will pass due inHom.n.
upon each candidate and upon each
amendment and law as he marks his
balbt. If so the results cannot he other
wise but beneficial. The thinking major

think is for the best interests of ail.
