ELGIN AGAINST IT
The people of Union county think that
Elgin votars are to sore r.ver McLeod's
defeat that they will even up with La
Grande by supporting the county division I
canddate. This is a wrong impres. on
as the people of Elgin are opposed to
this move and will oppose it to the bitcer
end.--igin Recorder.
. ill L... ... ''
Last week the Union papers were
astonished to think that Mr. Holnes"
nomination meant a campaign on the
issue of county division. The work ,of
the Union people was too transparent to
foci anyone, and the Union Republican
this week in admitting the isauo, lets itseif
down easy in the following manner.
"There is a persistent effort to inject a
county division fight into thu campaig.i.
aid it now seems mere than likely tnat
th i leg'slative contest may be fought out
. long that line, though such a contest is
not a necessity at this lime. According
to the programme. Mr. Rothchild. the
Democratic nominee, is to be slaughtered,
and there will be a concentrated effort to
elect Mr. Haworth. the Republican nomi
nee, by those opposed to county-division.
This throws the fignt between Mr. Ha
worth and Mr. Hoimes."
Mr. Holmes was in the Elgin Section
campaigning the past three days and
found the anti-division sentiment so strong
that he ccmes out in a statement that he
does not favor county division. Well if he
does not stand for division, what does he

Mr. Childers is entitled to the Demo
cratic vote in La Grande, no mors. This
town cannot affjrd to go on record as
being clannish for La Oranda Candida tes,
when their vital interests are not effected,
as is ths case with the sheriff s' office.

Someone mede mistake in. selecting
the court house in which to hold ths com
mencement exercises of ths High school.
The public would have) preferred to have
paid, a nominal admissidfi in ths opera
house-wher: thas. eee.ting capacity Is So
much greater. Hundreds could not se
cure seats last evepjj-ig, apd yfent home.
For many years La Grande tried to
secure a creamery and a machine shop.
Ws now have both and they , are both
doing a splendid business. We are now
about to secure a vinegar factory which
will provide a market for all of ths cull
fruit in ths county. Every additional
enterprise adds to the commercial impor
tance of the city. ,.ij.
. Twenty years ago La Grands thought
tha$ the big saw rjnill at JPyryffa-.coW"
pelled to locate in tnis city. It wanted to
come here but we all know why it did tiot.
History may. repeat itself. .A .
his reported that there is plenty of
money in Portland w ;n no Ukers that
Dr. Withycombe will carry the state by
10,000 majority. .
. There will undoubted'y be considerable
building in La Grande this summer and
fail if we are alive to our possibilities.
