DESERTER
(Scrlrpe News Association) .
Topeka, Kas., May 22. The military
authorities at Fort Riley, Kas., are entirely
satisfied with the decision of the Treasury,
so much in their behalf, aa to require of
them no payment to a civil officer who
arrested a man on the supposition that
1 was a deserter. The latter turned out
to be an ex-sold it r, and the civil officer
c aimed a reward or some compensation,
or at least reimbursement of expenses,
because the telegram of instructions to
him from Fort Riley contained th words
'usual reward." It appeared that the
man confessed desertion, but claimed that
he had been d'scharged for strvice. which
