was a decided success. The attendance
was satisfactory and all spent a most en
joyable evening. ,

Mrs. Geo. Grout left last night for
the Dallas where she will be joined by

Councilman C W. Humphreys of the
Star Planning Mill Co., Elgin, drove
through Thursday to have some repairs
for his mill made at the Machine shop.
He returned yesterday morning. ' v
It is the intention of those who are
arranging for Memorial services in this
city to make it the largest ever held and
with that in view it is requested to have
every secret and fraternal order in the
city to take part in the parade. '
Senator Walter Pierce will address
the citizens of La Grande this evening on
the political issues of the day at the
Opera House. . Mr. Pierce . has certainly
been a good - friend to La Grande and
certainly should be greeted with a large
audience. He is a good speaker and all
may rest assured of being well entertain

, A. F. Lewis who has been, in Portland
returned to La Grande this morning and
after remaining a few days he will re
turn to Salem.

cerday. Mr. McKay has taken up a home
stead and has what he considers ' one of
the best ranches in that vicinity.' His
many friends here are pleased to know
that he is doing well in his new ; home.
This morning a second Goliath arrived in
this city and attracted considerable atten
tion by the fact that a silk hat perched on a
head towering six feet five inches, com
bined to make him the largest man seen
in La Grande. When interviewed by an
Observer reporter he stated that he rep
resented a troup who will in the future give
an exact reproduction of the San Francisco
disaster. If the company Is as flood as
their manager is .large there will be no
limit to their ability.
Mr. A,' H. Averill or the A. H. ; Averhil
Machinery Co., of Portland, 'came up yes
terday to accompany the body to Port
land, of Mr. H. C. Linderman, who was
killed on the traction engine, of the Sum
merville Lumber Company Thursday
Mr. Linderman has been in the employ
ment of 'the company for the past ten
years and was held in high esteem by the
firm. He was to .have returned to
Portland the evening of the accident. .
Mr. G. C. Scheurer has purchased the
interest of J. P. Donnelly in the firm doing
business u.nder the name of Donnally &
Scheurer, and is now the sole owner and
proprietor of that fashionable confection
ary store. Mr. Scheurer assures the
former patrons -of the store the same
courteous treatment as of te past. Mr
Donnelly the retiring member of the firm
will remain in the city and will soon
- rgage in other business.
JUNIORS TAKE TO THE HILLS
The junior class of the high schoo' was
up with the birds this morning and about
the time the sun sent its first rays over
the hill tops, two carry-alls were seen
wending their way to the hills where the
resident j students spent the day fishing and in var
ious ways tried to forget their books.

RESOLUTION
BE IT RESOLVED: That the city
Recorder of the city of La Grande, be
and is hereby directed to give notice to
the abutting property owners on the east
side of 7th. street, between its Intersec
tions with M and P streets, for the con
struction of a side walk abutting the
premises, and a like notice to the abutting
property owners on both sides of Depot
street, from its intersection of Jefferson
avenue, to its Intersection of Fojgth
street and Adams avenue, rom44
intersection with Fourth Street, to
its intersection of First street: That
an ordinance for the improvement of said
street and avenue will be proposed at the
next regular meeting of this Council, for
the improvement of said street and ave
nue, by putting the same upon the estab
lished grade therefore, and paving the
same with crushed rock or gravel. -
