TOO MUCH TALK
As a matter of fact our La Grande
contemporary is talking too much upon
county division. Union has not said a
word. He e you candidates all of you.
that are honest did anybody in Union
molest you about county division? Were
you asked if you were or were . not for
county division? If so by whom? As a
matter of fact almost the entire republi
can vote of Union was cast for a La
Grande man to represent the county.
Does that indicate county division? Cut
this thing out until something is doing
Union Scout. , '
A new candidate for Representative is
out this week, in the person of Mr. George
Holmes, of Cove. Mr. Holmes is well
known to many of our people, and his
friends expect him to cut considerable
figure in the contest, 'which has assumed
a three-cornered shape. Mr. Holmes ex
pects to develop considerable strength in
Elgin, at Cove and among the farmers of
the valley. He is out on an independent
ticket Union Republican.
The Legislative contest in Union county
grows interesting. Mr. Haworth, the
Republican nominee, is not strong in La
Grande, his home town; Mr. Rothchild, of
North Powder, the Democratic nominee,
did not want the nomination, bjt was
forced to accept it by those who desired
to defeat Haworth; now comes Cove with
an independent candidate, backed by those

who art not altogether pleased with either
of the old-party nominees. The situation
is growing interesting. There is yet talk
of another independent , candidate, but it
seems hardly likely that he will materi
alize. The riders probably are all up
now for the race. Union Republican.
. ' Elgin is taking considerable interest in
the Legislative contest, and Is seeking a
way to even up the fearful drubbing re
ceived by her candidates at the primary
election.. Just what shape this matter
r
will take at the general election: is
question for debate. 1 he fr.ends of the
defeated candidates for party nomination
are legion, and if they should ' decide to
bunch their voting strength, Elgin will be
heard from at the June election, Union
Republican, n , -''
The women teachers in a St Louis
school sent one hundred carnations to the
man principal on the occasion of his birth
day anniversary, requesting him to keep
one for each year of his age and return
the rest. A delicate and aesthetic ex
pression of feminine curiosity,
Senator Bailey says Mr. Roosevelt is a
man of clay. ,- A far as presidential
favors are concerned, Bailey's name will
now be mud. Evening Capital News.
There is every prospect of a "bumper"
grain and fruit crop, and now a sweep
ing Republican victory will do Union
county a vast amount of, good. .
DEATH Of A FAMOUS DOC
(Soripps News Association)
Rome, May 19 Pippo, the famous fire
brigade dog, 'well known to" every man,
woman and child, and proudly pointed
out to visiting tourists, is dead and his
demise has caused general regret through
out the city, Pippo was called, by court
esy, a poodle, but his pedigree was sadly
mixed. His intelligence was remarkable.
however and so was his love for the men
of the fire department and everything
that concerned their work.
