After winning eight successive games,
Tempany' Boosters went down to defeat
afternoon in one of the fastest games that
has been played in Walla Walla this soa
son." The defeat was not due so much to!
the superior playing of the visitor a it
was to the good fortune 'of the visiting
team in placing it hit and much of , the
credit for the victory is due to Pitcher Betr
rel, who held the Boosters down to five
hits. Betzel has pitched only ' on game
before this year, but yesterday he demon
strated that he i of the right, stuff and
h sent over the plate such . puzzle that
the Boosters could not nd' them.
Victory wa won ty th La Grande
team by the horn run of Crawford and
Siegrist ' Crawford' homer was made
when there were no men on. bases, but
Sigrist's drive over the right field fence
brought home Van Buren, whom Rummel
had given a base on ball. The game
wa so replete with good play on both
sides that It would be unfair to distinguish
any player a superior to another. The
error marked were largely excusable,
and had the play been made th partici
pant in it would have been accredited

SUNDAY'S GAME . , .
After playing a great game of ball on
Saturday, th La Grande team succeeded
in giving about a stupid an exhibition of
the national game a one could possi
bly imagine in Sunday's game. When
Umpire Breed called "play ball" the
team, with but one or two exceptions,
seemed to make an ascension and they
did not come down until the last man
had struck out in the ninth inning. Mean
while the "Boosters" had run up a total
of 14 scores. La Grande gathered in
two with great effort Batteries; Walla
Walla, Parks anl Linkard; La Grande,
Gregory and Klebs. :
Athena took two games from Elgin at
the former's grounds Saturday and Sun
day. The Elgin bbysmade a very credit
able showing considering that this is the
first game of the season. Arnold their
new pitcher is making good with the ag
gregation, Hugg pitched his first gam
of ball yesterday and put up a fine ex
hibition of ball tossing. Poor support
lost Saturday's game. The score wa
8 to 1, Saturday and 4 to 1 Sunday.
Another week' -practice, will
see the boys in good condition and when
Elgin and La Grande takes a'tilt at' each
other next Sunday there should be ome
fine ball playing. The player are:

The high school boys proved too strong
last Saturday and rolled up a score that
is sufficient to prove them the strongest
team. After many changes, Hocken
berry's school was finally represented by
Earl Kilpatrick and Bacon. Walters of
Island City was a real "Black hors"
and captured the two dashes. In the

a splendid race and near the end fell,
cutting him out of the race. He i with
out a doubt th smallest hurdler on re

. The half mile was surprise to most
of th spectators. Reynolds had been
picked a 'a winner, and would . no dotbt
hav done so had he used . a little head
work. Ha started with a lively clip and
ran against a strong wing. ; Millring used
his head and took a position where Rey
nolds would serve as a . wind shield. At
just the right moment Millring spurted
and won a do race. : Reynold made
up for hit bad mistak by winning the
quarter. I
Kilpatrick made a wonderful perform
ance. He entered nearly every event and
generally managed to get a place. Fif
teen point are credited to him. ; '
In th high lump he pulled easy first.
The hurdle race wa a spectacular rac.
Edward lead th bunch all the way and
took everv hurdle In fin shape. The last
hurdle for Kilpatrick was blown down
And this enabled him to make up th dis
tance between him and Edwards and
both sprinted the last 6 yard neck and
neck, and finished so close that the judges

Relay race. La Grande won.- This
event was a failure because of the mis
understanding of the second man for
Island City. The first relay was run
very close, but when the Island City run
ner torched his next man he failed to
get off, and before he could be made to
understand that he was suposed to run
the second man for La Grande was tear
ing madly around the second lap. Island
City runners made a fine effort to lesson
the distance But Reynolds finished easy,
half a lap ahead.
