CHERRY CROP IS PROSPEROUS
From the last reports the canned goods
and dryed fruits on the Pacific coast are
more nearly exhausted now than they
have been at this season of the year, for
many years, and the prices are firm.
The prospects for all canning and drying
enterprises are very favorable this sea
son. The Grande Ronde Valley, will thTs
year, have 60 or 70 tons of Royal Anns
nd other white cherries that certainly
ought to go to some cannery, even if local
enterprise should fail to take hold of
this most desirable project, as the demand
has always greatly exceeded the supply

of Blue Mountain forest reserve, with
headquarters at Sumpter are in the city
today.
Cecil Galaway and Dwight 'Barnes
were here from Elgin today to attend the
Republican committee ' meeting. Dr.
Saunders and Lucius. Wright of Union
were among the many present
H. Cook and wife of Medical Springs
are in the city. Mr. Cook is the manager
of the Medical Springs hotel, and says
that business is prosperous in his native
town. He is a member of the Republican
Central Committee which meets here

Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Roberts of La
Grande, were in the city yesterday visit-
ng relatives and friends. They returned
home last night so that Mr. Roberts
might resume his duties as register of the
La Grande Land office this morning.

J, C. Gulling returned this morning
from Portland where he has been in the
hospital.' While there he submitted to an
operation whereby a growth was removed
from his left eye. He is getting along
nicely and will soon be 'able to resume
his run on the Elgin branch.
Water Superintendent Gillman has had
a force of men clfcanrg out the city well
Mr. Gillman is going to furnish the city
patrons with good water if a clean well
will help any.
Karl J. Stackland, of Cove, was in the
city today. The Stackland brothers have
over eight thousand trees in bearing this
year. Mr Stackland reports that the
fruit crop will be enormous and that the
berry crop will be the largest for many
years. The strawberry crop alone will
amount to a neat sum.

for joint senator for the counties of Union,
Umatilla and Morrow, came over this
morning to be present at the County
Central Committee meet:ng this
afternoon. His motto is "Fewer but
better laws." He is a pleasant man to
meet and in the primary race in his own
county ran ahead of the state ticket by
several hundred votes. His friends claim

Oscar Lund, of Cove, was in ths city
today. He is hauling brick for the Cove
Ctajitt' The first story, which is of
stone is completed, and the second story
which will be of brick is now in course
ofconstruction. Twenty thousand brick
will be used in the second story.
The Cove people are rejoeing over
their good fortune in effecting a com
promise with Mr. Allen who refused a
right of way through his farm, for the
Central railroad. The road will now
glide right into the center of the city.
Mrs. M. Cole, who has been visiting at
the Cole home, returned to her home in
Alamas, Colorado, this morning.
