' John Frawley Treasurer op' Union county We care not how you suffered, nor what failed to cure you, Hollister's Rocky Mountain Tea makes the puniest, weak est specimen of man or ' womanhood strong and healthy. 36 cents, Tea or THE GREAT NORTHWEST Eckhardt's Ideals opened their week's engagement at the opera house last night by presenting the sensational border- drama "The Great Northwest," which was a thriller from, start to finish. The startling climaxes caused the audience to hold thoir breath and from the amount of laughter brought forth from the audience. The Ideals certainly made a hit. -. Many laughable and ludcrous situations were involved ' during the action of the play. Chief among the fun makers was Oiiver J. Eckhardt in the role of Dibsey, a broken down lawyer. His work last night stamps him as a comedian of the first order, his natural spontanious com edy was both refreshing and excruciat ingly funny. The company is strong enough to give satisfaction if they would refra from attemptingthe blood and thunder sort of drama which depects a kind of western life which never existed. The bill to say the least was a poor selection. The prin cipal feature of the first act was the murder of some ones mother, and the star play of the secdnd act was where a girl in a buckskin suit and a twenty-two cleans out a saloon of bad western men. Later on in Ihis same act a noted e ha rio ter wno mii aiuuiiu muti. -ihg angel under "the name of Diamond Dick cleans up all that is left after the young lady finished her" work of straight ening out things. The third act finished up with a great fir scene and forced wedding, and this wedding would certain ly bring a blush to the face of a California contract marriage ' advocate. In - the fourth act. all the kinks are taken out and the great finish takes place with a fight which was certainly a dandy. The hero and the villian had a, hand to hand contest which was real enough to please the most blodd thirsty. In fact it was the best struggle scene which the writer' has ever seen on a stage. As stated before, the actors are good enough, but the piece is altogether too strong for this age. Tonight the Eckhardts will put on a three act farce comedy which will undoubtly please the house. One thing certain it will not frighten the women and children,, nor will it have any exhibitions of rifle practice with a shot gun at ten paces. It will be all fun tonight and from the work done last night it is evident that there will be plenty of opportunities to laugh. Laughter is better than tears anyway. The bil tonight will be "A Woman in the case." THE DIXIE JUBILEES They are coming with their sweet songs of the Southland, their quaint negro mel odies, their camp meeting songs that go home to our hearts. W. C. Buckner, who made th e Tennesseeians famous is the basso. The seven colored people who compose the company will delight their hearers. Central Church May 9. Tickets and reserved seats at Selders' store. W. J. Bryan says: "They are fine singers splendid entertainers." Robert Mclntyre, the noted lecturer says: (''They are a fine company fo artists. Their deportment both on and off the platfoim' is worthy of commenda tion." s . ' - Leland T. Powers says: "The Dixie are a very fine company. Too much praise cannot'be given them." EARTHQUAKE IN TENNESSEE ; Scrip ps News Association) Middletown, Tenn., May 8 -An earth quake shock occured here early today at East Hampton. Small buildings are re ported demolished, but no one is reported injured. : CRACK SPRINTER - It is rumored that Island Ci'.y has a surprise in store for the La Grande track teams next Saturday, in the shape of a crack sprinter and jumper. His name is Walters, and the sland boys confidently assert that he can and will beat McKen non. ; La Grande people find this hard to believe, and will have to he shown first. If Walters is as fast as he is said to be. there will be some fine running in the dashes, because McKennoh does not in tend to be beaten easily. H. P. S. Is counting on McKennon to win the meet ror them, while u H. 5, believes it can offset his work by trying for the weights and distances. Island City expects the jumps, but may be disappointed. : Last night in practice. Reynolds ran the half- mile in a way that showed that it will take fast ,men to beat La Grande High School in that event. If the meet or oven a financial success, the La Grande High School team will enter at Pendleton on Decoration Day. . - . MERCHANT OE VENICE !
