There are four cigar factories doing
business in this city. If one third of the
cigars used, were home made, twice the
number of cigar makers would be em
ployed, as at present.
A first class vinegar factory would te
tho means of giving a market to thou
sands of pounds of fruit that is now
wasted. A factory bcatcd in this city
means another pay roll. Pay rolls are
what we need, remember several small
ones are equal to one large one. Never
miss an opportunity to secure a payroll.

The proposed peace conference at the
Hague will not meet before September
20th. This arrangement was agreed to
by the other powers at the suggestion of
the United States, that the Pan-Amen
can Conference at Rio de Jeneiro might
not be interfered with.
People that live in glass houses should
not throw stones. If there is any more
mud slinging with a view to damaging the
character of the Republican nominee for
sheriff. W. W. Randall, who has lived in
this country for thirty years and against
whom naught can be said, there will be a
campaign opened up that will be past the
irr.it of insinuation, but will deal with
facts, and plenty of them.
That La Grande is a dirty city no one
can deny. A walk through the by-streets
and alleys, if you can get through, will
convince anyone. Pick up the old tin
cans and don't throw your old clothes in
the alleys we 'have seen them all before
you are ready to throw them away.
Burn up the old clothes and papers, and
have it said that La Grande is the "Parlor
City" of the Inland Empire. Thaf won't
be hard if everyone will do their part.
Don't wait for your neighbor to make the
start. Commence at once and you will
not be alone.
Get embued with the idea that as long
as it costs no more, that you are si ply
helping the community in which you live,
to pcrchase as far as possible whatever
is made in your own community. It was
fashionable a few years ago to purchase
everything possible in some foreign port.
That has passed away and it is now the
proper thing to purchase American made
goods. The leaders of the state have
caught the idea that "Made in Oregon"
is the proper thing. This is evolution,
that builds communities, states and
nations.
