manufacture of apple products and is a
professional vineearand wine maker, has
been quietly investigating the resources
between Boise City and Portland i. ce

plant to work up the cheap and surplus
fruiL Mr.-'Riolev has iust returned from
the coast and bas decided that La Grande
offers the best opportunity for business
of this kind. Taking into consideration
the large acreage of apples here and with
the eiMrt trade in view the coast Doints
from Alaska to California offer almost an
unlimited market. Goods can be mar
keted as far east as Chicago.
. A factory of sufficient capacity to
handle the fruit in this section will require
the co-operation of every fruit grower
and business man in La Grande. Those
who are acquainted with the preposition
are enthusiastic over the subject and a
mealing has been called for eight o'clock
tomorrow evening at the Commercial
Club. To secure this plant in time to
operate on this year's crop fruit grower

Tha nraliminar trial of Mika Carnav
of Hilcard who ni arrastad on a chares
of assult Friday night was held this morn
ing, and disclosed some startling facts.
The evidence showed that the defendent
had annroached tha house of H&rrv F ranch
a poor man living in Hilgard, and battered
down the door with a rock. Gaining ad
mittance in this way he assulted the old
man, kicking him, jumping on him with
lopffinff boots, and in evarv wav noaaihla

battered and pummeled the old gentleman.
Following Carney's arrest tha authorities
here sent medical aid to Mr. French, and
Dr, Hall testified this morning that the
njuries inflicted were, very severe, and
considering the advanced age of Mr.
French, whj is 77. It miv be soma tima
before he can appear to testify in his own
behalf. During the trial Cirnev nleadad
not guilty, but admitted thit he was vcrv
drunk at the time. He was bound over
to the June tern of court on a charge of
aggravated assult, and bail fixed at $300.
As no one offered to raise the necessary
amount he was lodged in jail.
