TDihF AT HOME
A discriminating centemporary suggest
that when you get a catalogue from a big
mail order house just look it over and see
what it will pay you for your farm pro
ducts. , Also investigate and see what
term of credit are offered in case you
don't have the ready cash; also how
much it will subscribe towards public im
provement in your town. Go to the
assessor's book and see what part of the
taxes it pays in your city. Just write
and see what it will give to assist the
poor of your community. After you have
done this and received a reply go to your
home merchant, get his price, deduct the
coat of transportation on the goods you
are wanting to buy of the mail order
house, and see if it is not more to your
advantage to trade at' home. The result
of this little investigation will awaken a
new loyalty to local institutions is a fact
which needs no affirmation.
Clean up the town. The alleys need
attention. Take a day off and clean up
from lawn to back yard. Your neighbor
may notice the change and work a little
on his own place. '

Cigarette smoking is no longer simply a
moral question. The gieat business
world has taken it up as a deadly enemy
ot advancement, of achievement. Lea
inj business firms all over the count
have put the cigarette on the prohibited
list. In Detroit alone, sixty-nine mer
chants have agreed n jt to employ the
c'garette user. In Chicago, Montgomery
Ward and Company. Hibbard. Spencer
and Bart'ctt. and some of the other large
concerns have prohibited cigarette smok
ing among all employees under eighteen
years of age. Marshall Field and Com
pany, and the Morgan and Wright T're
Company have this rule: "No cigarettes
can be smoked by our employees." One
of tho questions on the application blanks
at Wanamaker's reads: "Do you use to
bacco or cigarettes?"
The superintendent of the Lindell Street
Railway, of St Louis. ays: "Under no
circumstances will I hire a man who
smokes e;garattes. He is as dangerous
on the front end of a motor as a man
who drinks. In fact, he is more danger
ous: his nerves are apt to give way at
any moment. If 1 find a car running
badly. I immediately' begin to investigate
to find if the man smokes cigarettes.
Nine times out of ten he does, and then
he goes, for good."
